Hi!
Is the heat shield on the muffler necessary on a 2011 Apex XTX? Mine has come loose from the muffler.
Thanks in advance/Lasse.

This is what I used for the bottom half of the heat shield as the material was starting to disintegrate/come apart. Not sure if it was necessary but at least there's something:

witch one? if it is on top of muffler, i would replace as it protects the seat pan from the exh heat.

That's the problem @maim, I don't think you can order/replace just the lining; would have to order the complete cover/protector. That's why I posted what I used. Thought maybe it could be used in his application as well.

i replaced the upper cover in your pic as the liner was basically gone on my 11. the lower was fine at that time other than i glued the lower in place with high heat silicone. i have used that style on betsy when stock failed and on an atv to sheild the plastics from the exh heat.

a picture would help with where op is concerened.

This is what it looks like.
Under the seat.
Inside the track tunnel. The heat shield is directed downwards, towards the drive track.
Can I drive without the heat shield without risking any complications?

in the track tunnel, you should be fine. the only time it might be an issue is in low snow conditions.

a used replacement muffler are cheap, replace it, the shield is there for a reason.

Look like about 600 USD for a new one .. saw one for 100 CDN .. expect not easy
to get in Sweden.. I don't own one of these , only wish to have a 40th anniv someday.
Appears they wanted some cooling of the exhaust from tunnel snow and left a
big hole there and protected the actual muffler with a shield spot welded to
the muffler . Cars had these with gaps between them to keep from burning
lawns etc.
Looks like a low tech muffler , no valves inside ?, If just has a few broken spot welds
maybe drill a couple holes in spots that would hit the inner pipes , If the muffler
shell is sound , and steel rivet it back tight. ? Maybe a few well placed gear clamps?
..
Really looks like it was intended to keep from rusting the muffler out from the
direct water pitting it when it explodes into steam.
Just my cheap thoughts .
Ron
edit , reconsidered my thoughts , expect the concept of having the exhaust
under the seat created heat and caused ice buildup and maybe this exposure of
the muffler helps keep the tunnel top clear ?
