Never had the need for a heated shield as I never have issues with fogging. Today I went for a ride in a bit of freezing drizzle here and there and was pulling over every few miles to scrape off the ice. I'm now considering a heated shield but was wondering how well they work, or IF they work with freezing drizzle?

They freezing drizzle just makes a slush on the visor. It all depends on how much if falling. The heating element is on the inside of the double walled visor, at least on all of the ones i have had.

the hjc brand shield is your best bet.
the double walled visors don't work well for the application you described

Same here. At most it may make it a little easier to wipe off, but will not melt the ice off. Designed for fogging inside only. Just doesn't get hot enough to melt ice on the outside.

I was just about to post this same question. I put my heated shield back onto my modular helmet since I too got caught in the same situation with the freezing on the shield. Has anyone put rain-x or a similar product on their shield to help ice not sticking to the shield?

one tip for easy removal of ice on a sheild, hold it in front of the exhaust outlet for a few seconds and it melts off quickly. the heated visors help some, but sometimes you have to keep clearing as you drive. the gloves with the built in mini wiper on the finger work well.

These products only work on glass. Check the label "Not for use on plastics"
Using a plastic polish may help.

Freezing rain vs heated sheilds. Freezing rain will always win for the resons stated above.
Been caught twice in freezing rain with my HJC heated visor and the only way to keep it half az clear was to drive fast and keep my head down behind the windshield.

Only the inside shield is heated so it won't help with the freezing rain hitting the outside shield. I have a wiper blade on my glove which helps wipe some of it. I also once had a washcloth with anti fogging fluid on it in my left hand that I occasionally wiped my shield with. Maybe windshield washer fluid would work. Hasn't happened to me in a long time though.

I guess it would depend on the temps because I have found the heated shield to work well in freezing rain. You have to wipe the shield to get rid of the water but the heat keeps it from freezing to the plastic.

This was at just below freezing temps, at well below freezing temps maybe not so well I don't know! I have found the heated shield to work anytime I have been in freezing rain!

This is why I always ride with a heated shield. The other night snow came at a fast rate and I saw guys pulled over dealing with their non electric shields.
The heated shield will turn the outside ice to soft ice so you can wipe it off. I unplugged mine once to see the difference and the ice froze hard and couldn't be scraped.

I think I'll try one. I've got an HJC IS-16 and the shields aren't too bad as I've found one for 69$ shipped. Probibly would have worked yesterday, it was about 28*f out.

I have a IS 16 Scratch with the HJ-09 Shield. The shield will work fine. I don't know if I like the helmet though. It's not as warm as my old HJC CS-10. It lets too much air inside and the built in visor always freezes up so it's worthless.
The Gmax withthe external sun shield might of been better for the sun.
