I am replacing my driven side jackshaft bearing and I am trying to get the split collar back in. Problem is that it doesn't want to go back in and I am hitting it pretty hard! Anyone know something I don't?

Split collar won't go in

You must have the bearing in backwards, it's tapered on the inside of the bearing and will only go on from one direction, Ken.

help

You can't believe everything you read on these forums, but I 'll tell ya that if you push the collar into the bearing from one side and then turn it around and push it in you'll see that it goes in about a half an inch farther which means the bearing itself has a slight taper contrary to what someone else said on this subject on a prior post, Ken.

I too have the same problem,I've heard about the tapered bearing too but my dealer told me its the collar thats tapered.I ruined 2 bearings trying to get this right, next time i'll try the bearing both ways before installing.Focker did your bearing wear out totally or are you just changing it b4 it do give out?Mine went altogether and the outside race is stuck in the frame any ideas on how to get it out?

Hey Snowman -
Don't know if you had any luck getting that outside race out but I would try to heat the mounting flange. It is aluminum; the race steel so it will expand at a greater rate. Use a good torch and go easy. It should expand it just enough to let go of the race. If you start to feel the heat getting to the race, quit because it will expand and defeat the process.

Good luck

Mikey is correct! Heat gun would be fine if you have one. It slipped my feeble mind here at 01:30!

Bearing replacement

If you guys have to replace the bearing put in the 04 bearing setup. It has a threaded collar with a locknut that goes on the inside of the bearing ,noway it should come loose with this . I think Yamaha really ought to replace all these old ones on a recall but they seem to want everyone to fix and pay for all these prblems themselves. Ken

Thanks for the replys guys. I ended up grinding the inner race to put a taper on it, it seemed to work out pretty good. Snowman, my bearing went completely, it was wasted! I rigged up a puller using a series of washers, a bolt and a piece of steel(actually I used a Wonder bar). Just put the bolt with the washers(smallest to biggest) through the back side, then through the wonder bar and use some washers and a socket for spacers. Just tighted the nut on the bolt and the bearing will come right out. I will definately look into the 04 setup for next time.
