I have a 2006 Apex with 6,500 miles on it and recently have developed the following problem.
Traditioanly the sled idled at about 2,000 RPM with cold (while the warm up light was on) then droped to the more traditional 1,000 RPM range once it was warm. Recently my sled only idles at around 1,400-1,500 RPM when cold (and the warm up light is on) but still drops to the 1,000 RPM range once it warms up. When it gets really cold (colder than minus 15C) the 1,400-1,500 RPM range is sometimes not enough to keep the sled running while cold and it stalls - that's when the fun starts!! Because it stalled during the warm up there is what I believe to be excess fuel and when I go to restart the machine it is flooded. This means openning up the air box and turning it over for 5-10 min with wide open throttle. I eventually get it started (knock on wood) but it is a real pain.
Anyone with any ideas as to what the problem is?? Dealer seems to have no idea. BTW I use 0W-40 symthetic oil (and always have) so its not a problem with the engine oil being too thick when cold.

one of the tech guys will probably chime in, it might be the 0w-40 is to thick on start-up in the cold

Did you adjust your idle back up to 2000? Its the black knob on the left side. It would be possible for that to slowly rotate closed over time. I just had to do it to mine.
BTW idle rpm is to be 1500 +or- 100 rpm, mine was down around 1000 as well and while quieter i now run it at 1400 once warm and its about 2200-2500 cold

Thanks kinger. Did not adjust the idle - where exactly to I find the black knob you are referring to??

It is on the clutch side. When you take off the side panel look by the bracket that holds the headlite assembly down you will see a big plastic knob with a slot in it. You may need a lite to look in there. You can use a long bladed screwdriver to turn it.
Hope this helps.

I've tried adjusting the idle setting and this has not fixed the problem. I've also run injector cleaner and fuel system cleaner through a couple tanks of gas - still no luck!
Just noticed some backfiring on hard WOT pulls - while I changed by donuts 3,000 miles ago I'm thinking they are gone again. Any chance the two problems are connected???

I to this year have noticed inconsistent idling and have actually fouled out two sets of plugs this year. I starting to wonder if it is the crappy gas we are getting these days. Anyone else with problems this year?

I'm starting (hoping) to belive it may be plugs that have fouled as a result of a stall during cold idle. While I've been able to get the sled restarted each time (openning up the airbox and disconnecting the EFI) I've heard the plugs never really "clean" themselves - this might be the reason for both the rough cold idle and the backfire issues?
Anyone else having these problems??
