hello everyone I am new to the Yamaha sled world. Just picked up a 18 viper new. I have had several sleds over the years. Since LEDs have become more and more available I run them in sleds, help friends with them. My question is how does one get to the headlight bulbs to pull and change them. I was told they are H4 and I have them waiting to be put in? Thanks in advance.

Sadly you need to pull the hood to do it right. Then pull the wind shield. Then the four screws that hold the fairing down and the 2 up from the bottom at the rear of hood. Then the 4 screws that hold the headlight assembly in are accessible.

Thanks sounds fun to do. I guess I will try and look at as the finished product will be much better. How long of a Job you think?

About an hour.

I feel this is worth a mention as you're already putting in the effort. There is a new product manufactured by a member that easily adjusts your headlights as needed. I'll post the thread to read if you're interested. Good luck and welcome to the site.

Ok @trail traveler, you deserve a commission from Rocztoys... I just ordered the headlight adjuster because I am planning on changing headlights soon and your comment about doing both made a lot of sense.

The adjuster looks sweet. The reflector on the viper is poor so any change from stock will be a plus.

I just installed my headlight adjuster and it works great! I chose to install the knob on the left side of the shroud (ala MrSled). Clean install and the adjuster stays with the hood instead of being tied to the frame of the sled.

While in there, I also installed some cheap LED bulbs. I had a heck of a Time removing and reinstalling the retaining clips.

I searched to see if I could find some kind of tool that would help but I couldn't find anything. So I came up with a super cheap and easy tool that really helps the process and may help someone else.
The problem with the retaining Clips is that they're bowed (springy) so that they put some pressure to keep the bulb in place. This means you need to apply pressure while turning the clip to install it.
I took a chunk of inch and a quarter PVC pipe cut two slots on each side to fit into the retainer clips.

It worked pretty darn good! I was able to push in and turn at the same time allowing me to get the clip back in place.

That took you just made is identical to the tool that comes with the Roctoyz HID kits. It works slick.

LOL, great minds think alike I guess!

When installed correctly the adjuster works great. I have used it when I load up for a bagger trip, making an adjustment down to compensate for the extra load on the rear.

You just have to pull the hood to change the bulbs.... pull the hood, pull the plugs, take off the rubber boots, move the metal clip and install new light. Reverse for install
