I thought it would be pretty straight forward to install, I ran power and ground from my battery to the socket, drilled and installed the socket, had 12.0 volts and everything looked good but I appear to have fried 2 gps power cords, obviously something isn't right but what? any help is appreciated.

Sounds like how I installed mine. I did use 12 gauge wire from the battery to the socket, I also installed an inline 10 amp fuse.

Not sure why the cords are fried! Unless the power is reversed! Ground is outside part power is the inside center.
I used a 3 amp fuse as my shield and power point feed off the same fuse and together they draw less then 3amps.

Problem solved, cleaned up contact for ground and all works fine, replaced fast acting fuses in cords and now they work again as well.
I was just going to post that your ground cant be good and its most likely grounding through the unit where you mounted the unit.
