Hello guys!!
I walk into my local Yamaha shop and just feel the love.. Honestly, I've bought quads, dirtbikes, and motorcycles from them... but never a sled. I think this could be my chance.
Got a pretty decent deal on a 2010 FX Nytro xtx in black.
I have a few questions before I go through with the buy...
1. How well does the Trail tank fit on the sled?
2. Will the electronic gas gauge work with the aftermarket tank?
3. Will a 2 inch lug fit on this sled without modification?
4. What kind of skis do most people go with for these sleds?
5. How is this sled for jumping and really rough trails?
and I know you guys are biased..
but how does this sled stack up against a 800R Backcountry X??? I'm considering ordering a 800etec...
thanks a lot fellas!

There is a XP gade X 800R (carb) and an XTX in our group and I rode them back to back in the mountains last month.
The 800R is powerful and light no doubt about that but the XTX felt lighter than it is. I actually liked riding the XTX better. When carving back and forth the XTX seemed easier to balance, smoother and I felt more in control of it.
But no doubt the 800R had a lot more power.
....and just for reference my own sled at the time was a 2007 Rev 800 HO.

The trail tank fits perfectly. Just like a factory tank. If you trim some plastic it will even look factory. I think it looks better, a very clean look.
The electronic gauge does work with the trail tank. I got the clear tank just so I would always know for sure how much fuel I have. My gauge seems to be very close without any modifications though.
A 2" lug track will fit without any modification if you get the Camoplast Challenger that is "notched" ( I know for certain because I have done it). Or you just simply have to remove your tunnel protectors and then you can run any track up to 2".
A lot of guys run slydog skis and C & A skis, both are very good but the C & A are very aggressive and require a good amount of steering effort but really hook well. I run C & A but if I could do it again I would get the slydog powder hounds... hopefully a little less steering effort and better flotation. It sounds like almost any more aggressive aftermarket ski works much better than stock. But I would get a good wide ski if you plan on going in the powder.
I never rode a xtx but instead had the rtx se and it loved jumping and rough trails. The rougher the better. The rougher the trails got, the bigger the moguls, the more I liked it. But I have heard the xtx can be a little soft...but the xtx guys should be able to tell you what they think.
Speed and acceleration sounds to be very close to a 800r. The nytro is a rocket out of the hole! Probably not as good off trail as a backcountry due to the weight but I have no experience with either, just read about it (so anyone feel free to correct me if you know different).
Also, I'll note I sold my nytro and ordered a 800 etec xrs for a bunch of different reasons ...pm me if you want to know details.
Good luck!

Also, I think this bumper is awesome. Would be perfect for running trees over in the backcountry!

Sleddingfarmer, I'm curious why someone with as many posts as you and obviously knowledgable regarding Nytros, would up and leave to the dark side! Just seemed funny you giving advise to someone thinking about buying an XTX and ending your post stating Oh by the way I just sold my Nytro and bought a doo!

I really like this site, a lot of really nice people spending a lot of time to help basically total strangers...you dont find that very often these days. So even though I dont have my nytro I like to still share what I know. I also sold my nytro to my brother, so I'm gonna still be working on it a lot...so I better keep learning as much as I can.
I wouldn't consider ski-doo the dark side, the dark side has got to be polaris or arctic cat. I really liked the nytro, its a blast to ride, but it really pissed me off when I took my header off at 3000 miles and my exhaust donuts were destroyed, then jacked my front end up and the tie rods were loose...and the a-arm bushings are shot.
Also, I didn't like how it would handle in the powder unless I took the time to set it up for powder. Same thing with the trails, it sucked on the trails if I was set up for powder riding. Well sometimes we play in the powder, ride trail for 80 miles and play in the powder some more. I'm not gonna whip out the tools and switch stuff everytime. I saw a 800r shorty that was riding with me jump in about a foot of powder, do a tail walk for 75 feet, whip a donut, jump back on the trail while doing a tail walk and then completely leave me in the dust through the woods. SOLD
Nothing against the nytro, my brother is going to love it once he revalves the shocks. It will cost him a couple hundred bucks every few years in maintenance but he won't mind cause I'll do the work for free.

I agree that rider on that 800r was really good, a better rider than me. I was just referring to how the sled would work in the powder, and be tons of fun, and also work well in the woods. PLUS get the exact same gas mileage as me.

Thanks for the reply. Too bad about the problems with your Nytro. Too bad Yamaha didn't work out some of these details before springing this sled on us.Most of us have had same issues. I thought of going back to Cat last year but just couldn't do it! Like a lot of guys have said, wouldn't go back to a2-stroke ever! I also like the "motorcycle" fit and finish of the yamaha. None of other manufacturers have that.
Too bad the doo won you over, maybe some day Yamaha will see the light and build the sled that quite a few guys seem to need and is missing from their lineup.Good-luck man.

I am having such a hard time making a decision!!! I just can't see the advantage in the Nytro other than the price... the 800e-tec has better fuel economy, a bigger tank, is much lighter, and lots more power.....
oh my...
I really don't want to spend 15k canadian on a sled this year.... I might just hold off until next year...

If that is what you want it for, then get the 800 e-tec..... It's better off trail... But,m the bottom like is this... It will do everything better off trail, then the Nytro, but.... The 800 will never have the durability and reliability that the Nytro has. You decide...

so basically the nytro only has reliability and durability going for it? My cousin has replaced his front end bushings a number of times now, with only 1500kms.. Now, that may be a isolated problem... but I believe you will have problems with whatever you buy.. over time at least.. I want something that will out perform the competition, and something I'm going to be comfortable on and most of all have fun on.
I'm going into town Monday to check out the XTX, I'll post up my decision after that.. Thanks you guys for the help!
I'm hoping I feel comfortable on the Nytro.
