Hi guys and gals,

SO after over 20000 combined miles on my 2 apex's a stud finally got me. Was out doing some awesome spring riding when i looked down and heat light was on, pulled over... no coolant, well some left, but noit much. We had some with us so we filled her up. could not find leak but it was there, its slower so it was not dumping it out fast. we were quite the ways away from the truck. SO i would fill it up... drive for 8-10 miles, light comes back on.. stop find water, fill up agian and continue. I know i should have left it but had to keep going. it got to the point where at idle it would just shut off.

So my question(s).

when these things shut off at idle,or under low rpm driving is this the "I'm too hot" safety??? I have a bad feeling i may have taken the head gasket out, because now i can't get it to run... it plan will not start. I had to leave it in the woods over night, and got it back out last night, but still on the truck so have not looked at it.

What do i need to do? Leak down test? compresion test? i will be putting new plugs in because i fould them up trying to get going, i have a new rad, so not worried for that change out. I've done everything to this sled exept getting into the motor, so i know i will have questions.

Input please if you have ever been here!!!!

thanks sherlock!...

Yeah you got it to the point of to hot to run and it turn itself off. You should of towed it back and not rode it. I would check for a melted connection or wire. I would do a leak down test to be safe.

Yup, should of towed it. Same thing happened to me this past dec. My buddy who lives on the lake where it happened was nice enough to use his Ski Doo to tow me home. Granted it was only 1 mile. I feel for ya,I was lucky enough to shut her down before the light ever came on. I had the exchanger welded.

Yes i know should have towed... but it is what it is... just looking for some insite of what to look for when i get into it!!??

YUp,i had mine pop a hole out back on the connection tube, and lost most all of my coolant before i made it to a safe place, loaded it on the truck by its owne power, unloaded it off the truck, but it did not want to run, worth a crap, after multipal start up attemps,it fired up,and unloaded, once i fixed the pipe, and reinstalled a new track, and coolant,it fired up,and now runs great,i dont think you blew a head gasket, just repair the hole, refill with good coolant and try to restart it,i bet you are still ok. ;)!

hey snowbeast... this is about what happened... It was getting hot yes... but everytime the coolant light came on, i shut it down and refilled with water... drove until on... refilled... did this 4 or 5 times... until it just would not restart after it shut off... i know i fould the plugs..(trying to restart) they are the originals @ 10300 miles.. so i'm due. have new ones, will be getting into this tonight to find exactly where i'm leaking.. will update once i find out.

Well got to look at the sled.... one of my double backers came out... nice rectangle hole in track, kinda looks like a ported mountain track now... nice gash with pin hole where it caught the rad... so my 40th is done for the season... i already have a 144 track, rad, but need rails/tunnel extension... just hope motor is fine.... going to change out plugs, and fill it back up and get it running before i start modding...

I know all about it too. Buddy put a hole in the front cooler, ran it untill the coils melted and quit. I bought it cheep, took the motor apart, rings lost temper and oil smelled terrible. bearings, head was fine so scuffed the holes out, new rings, lap the valves with new seals. got it back in and going, sounds great. thinking of putting a water pressure guage or pressure light in somewhere, that way if i ever loose coolant, pressure will go down and light will go on long before it gets to hot.

If you kept it full of water and shut it down as soon as the light came on you shopuld have no problems. I would have done the same thing if that far away. Somebody sees it on the trail waiting for you to go back in get it,it won't be there to long,I hear the yamahas are popular with the thieves up in canada!!! Could be possible the plugs are to fouled for it to start, especially with that many miles on the plugs and your frequent starts and stops. Do you have any codes. Do you know how to check them? Hold select and reset with the key off, turn key on hold for 8 seconds, when d1 apears let go then hold them both for another 2 seconds, scroll through the numbers until you get to 61 using select. 61 tells you what code you have and 62 tells you how many codes in the system. Reset codes with grip warmer, push up or down.

well, hows this for a story.... so as above i blew the track and lost front cooler.... so i was so pissed my season on the 40th was done desided to take out the rtx on thursday... called work, loaded the wifes sled, and away i went with the boys... well about 25 miles into the amazing +10c day.... out of no where.... boom.... thought i broke a chain... well come to find out i fell into the "broken" driveshaft club... now my season is... done. I managed to get about 3200 miles on so far, but i need to peice together 2 sleds... this is gonna be getting expensive.!!! and out of my group i'm the "sled mechanic"... fanatical about maintenance...
