Been smelling gear oil after running 80+mph on rr grades for a few miles at a time. I can smell it on the normal slower trails too sometimes. Can touch the case for a second but thats it, its as hot as the oil tank. Since the first ride I noticed it, I had the upper bearings replaced and a complete gear/chain swapped out. Yes oil level is good and ran OEM oil, tried different tension on the chain, and all parts look good. Tried Klotz oil and no help there either. I see no obvious problems inside, what gives?? If somebody could run on a rr grade then check the temp, let me know what a normal case runs at that would be some good info. Less than 5000 miles on my sled. Heck it smells like gear oil maybe it's something else??

The reverse chaincases on both my 2002 SRX and my Attak get quite warm after long high speed runs, but I never smell gear oil from them. I have never put the heat gun to them so I don't know what temp they are getting up to.

Maybe its something else thats stinky? I've never checked it before this. Wondering if you can keep your hand on the case for any amount of time or just a quick touch like mine? Maybe it's engine oil? leaky hose or something, it's under warranty but it's nice to narrow it down before it goes in. Hmm maybe I'm chasing the wrong thing here

After a multi mile[20 mile+++] high speed run my SRXs chaincase has been too hot to touch...[have not noticed my Attaks too hot to touch]. I noticed this on my SRX after my buddies Arctic Cat boiled the oil in his chaincase so we checked mine to see how hot it was.

Before I installed the reverse chaincase on my SRX the standard chaincase was never too hot to touch.

Typically the Apexs don't smell of oil, fuel or anything so you may have some sort of issue.

As an after thought...check the chain tensioner roller bearing as they will sometimes start binding up resulting in excessive friction and high temps.

I noticed the same on my 2011 after a 40mile wide open run looked at everything no issues going on, the oil must ave got discolored from the heat and had Mobil 1 80w 90 synthetic gear oil in it. So I just changed it. I think they run hot when running at sustained hi speeds that my opinion because there was a guy on here from Canada that's runs wide open across a big lake and always over heated his chain case oil. He fabricated a bigger reservoir on it to hold more oil and fixed the problem.

Ok maybe I have a breather hose off or split open causing engine oil to bake somewhere. If this weather would let up I'd go outside and unload it. I checked all the bearings in the case even the smaller needle bearings, all seemed to be good there's nothing obvious or major wrong that I can tell. Only the upper ones had a small amount of noise so we replaced those. I just don't want it to loose a seal and dump the oil and leave me stranded. I even tried running the chain a little loose and no change there.

Gear oil in the 4-strokes -other than the new Viper take a few miles for things to get warm.Older 2 strokes warmed up sooner because of the can/muffler that was close to the case.make sure your not too full on the oil ,or and slinging around because of a seal somewhere and landing on brake or making its way toward exhaust a 12" away ..

Once in awhile I can get a wif of gear oil from my Attak. I like to get as many long high speed runs in as conditions permits. I take the chain case apart every year. Never find any overheated parts or burnt oil.
This year I replaced all the bearings and seals (over 10k miles). Still smell gear oil one in awhile. Is it because the reverse cases have so little oil in them or.....?
I run mine in the middle of the standard case level. The reverse level just looks to low for my liking.
Its not broken so can't fix it but I'm sure I could find a way to mod it.:D

Gear oil has a very strong smell! Maybe getting HOT and scent travels up your shin leg up to nose ? Not low That's where I fill mine .

Yeah one wold think if a small part or bearing was getting that hot to make the entire case be that hot you would find a blue part or some evidence.
