Silly question I know. I bought the sled ('03 RX1) used and don't really have any history on what's been done to it. It's completely stock as far as I can tell.
I suspect this particular change has been done though just based on the temperature of the grips and thumb. Just starting the sled up and letting her idle the heaters default to the middle setting, the grips get toasty and the thumb is almost too hot without wearing gloves.
Are there any telltale signs I can check?

Does it have the original handle bar? I believe the yamaheater only works with 07 and up handlebar. Have a quick look under the hood you should have find a black box if it does have it!

Do you have a little red or green LED light mounted somewhere near your instrument cluster? The kit has one of those. Also, look for the module under the cowling just below your guage cluster near the wiring. It's about the size of a wallet and says "Yamaheater" on it.

I'm betting you don't and don't need one. Those early models had excellent heat.

Yeah no, LED or module that I can see under the hood. I just kept reading about how crappy the warmers were so I figured if mine were hot something was changed. But if you guys are saying that the older ones had better heat then I'll be happy with that.
Thanks!

I have a 2007 RS Vector GT that I bought last fall and the warmers work great. I'm sure I don't have Yamaheaters. I never used them when it was colder than 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I heard that's when they let you down (when you need them the most). It that true?

Kind of...
As it gets colder, you need more & more heat to feel comfortable.
If your grips can't deliver enough heat to keep up, then your fingers start feeling colder.
So in effect, yes, they let you down when you need them most.
As a general rule, If they get nice and hot in your garage, most likely they will be fine for you on the trail.
Most of the Vectors are pretty good stock, Think you will be fine.

My buddy had an RX1 and always gave me crap about my Apex bars being cold and his getting too hot. I would bet you don't need to worry about it.

Basically when they went to "Fuel Injection", the grips started to loose their effectiveness. This is due to the ECU programming reducing the power to the grips below a certain RPM.
If it gets cold enough, any sled will struggle, but the F.I. units struggle in the 20*F range.

Rock,
Do you have directions fo those of us that have purchased sleds with your heaters installed? Or do they just work when the sled is started?
I know they are on the Apex I purchased, and there is a light on the dash with a small toggle switch. I'm not really sure what either of them mean or do.
Thanks for your help. I didn't see anything on your site for support docs.

Hey biffdotorg!
They are on the Support page.
Here is the link.

Look under Testing.
Hope this helps!

PS Most people never turn off the switch.
We don't even put them on the newer units, as most never use them & they are the most likely part to fail.

I agree. My 03 RX-1 and 04 Warrior were fine. I didn't start having issues until my 06 Attak. Then all Apex's, LTX's on......LJ 452 said:Basically when they went to "Fuel Injection", the grips started to loose their effectiveness.
