With drive-belt removed, made a temporary mark on the outer edge of my secondary clutch. Rotated it forward and backward by hand. The mark on my clutch free-travels back and forth almost 2 1/4" inches before the driveline slack comes out to allow the driveshaft to move. This is an 07 Attak with reverse.
Seems like an awful lot....if this were my Doo, I would be searching for a serious chaincase issue/loose chain/worn keyway somewhere. But these shafts are all splined and my chain is tensioned to Yamaha specs of finger tight less 1/4 turn. And tightening the chain further doesn't change it a bit.
Is this normal? I'm thinking (hoping!) it's engineered slop in the lower gear to allow room for the reverse gear teeth to engage more easily. Forgot to check for this free-travel before I swapped tracks and am now second-guessing myself....didn't screw something up in there, did I?
Still learning about these Yami's....Thanks!

It's normal. All Yamaha models with reverse are the same way. It's simply how the reverse gear and "drive" gear interlock.
That was my assumption, but now I feel better hearing it from someone with much more experience than I. Thank you much!

I agree as well. I have a '00 Vmax 600 Deluxe, and it has the backlash also, due to the reverse. FYI, I have also seen the same thing in another brand (Polaris) with reverse gear. This is obviouslyfor mechanical reverse, not the PERC.
