how to pull start your Viper

The guys at OSM don't care ... it's not their sled!

How else would you start it when the starter gear fails?

I've seen a video of a guy using a short piece rope wrapped around the primary of a Phazer to pull start the sled when the starter failed. Pretty much the same thing that the guys at OSM did with that Viper except they used another sled to do the pulling. Not sure if one person could manage the rope trick on a Nytro motor, but at least you wouldn't be running the risk of doing more damage in the event that the strap they were using caught hold of an A-arm or a spindle, etc. Not likely the guy on the Cat would be able to stop in time if the strap did catch. Eventually, the OSM boys have to give these sleds back. How would they explain the damage caused then?

Buddy of mine blew his starter twice on his Nytro MTX in the middle of nowhere. He just wraps a rope around the clutch, pulls it and he's gone.

Those OSM guys are complete morons and shouldn't even be giving advice on any level. Reason being anyone with any shred of common spence knows you " remove the belt" before attempting this procedure, make it a whole lot easier and completely safe.

Ok so i agree the osm guys are idiots but i am confused on why you would remove the belt?
If the starter fails you cant start the sled without turning it over by the clutch.
If you remove the belt and start the sled the sled is still useless.
The sled can be started by wrapping the clutch with a strap. And pulling by hand
These idiots created the issue with the sled lunging forward by spinning the clutch too fast with it attached to another sled.
Real stupid and dangerous.

By removing the belt it decreases the chance of the primary ramping up and squeezing the belt causing it to creep forward, as well as by removing the belt it reduces the friction on the primary allowing it to spin more freely. Both ways work one is just safer than the other.

I am pretty sure I have seen it done by hand on a warm Yamaha 4 stroke. But cold from another sled is a first! Yo have to do what you have to do! Yes the OSM guys don't care but if for any reason MY sled is the only one not starting because of a starter fail the morning of a big trip, add rubbing from my non Yamaha friends, for sure I'm doing this. Life and season is to short to miss a great day sledding!

what RTX is saying is even though it is easier to start your sled without the belt on. how do you get it to move? i have never put a belt on a running sled.

Installing a belt on a clutch rotating at 1500rpm ? I would think that's prety dangerous, could cause serious injury.

You can't be serious?!!!!

There is only one thing that comes to mind:

OSM guys may be a bit reckless, but starting a sled without a belt and trying to install a belt is very dangerous. Do not try that at home.
