Perhaps I should have asked this question last year when it happened....but better late then never. Was out for a ride and the engine stopped. Slight clunk when it happened. Anywho...took it to my mechanic on the way home and all he did was turn the key and listen to my story. When nothing at all happened when he turned the key he automatically said it was the cam tensioner that went and likely took out my valves and pistons etc. Could it be something else though???? Thanks in advance...trying to decide to fix it or junk it....thanks

I'm sure others will chime in but I would at least go somewhere else and get a more thorough exam and determination.

Could be a few things, and the rest of your engine doesn't necessarily have to be damaged. Definitely needs a thorough inspection and diagnosis. Where in Ontario are you located? Someone on this site maybe able to help you figure out your problem if you live close by. A wealth of knowledge, experience and willingness to help fellow sledders on this site.

I'm in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I'd hate to drop like 500 bucks into it just to find out it's toast....but I guess it's something I may have to do.

most times when the tensioner fails it wipes out the teeth on the crank that drive the timing chain. It gets expensive real quick if going to fix a motor that jumped time. Dealers call me for whole motors as its cheaper to put another motor in than fix the damaged one.
To answer your original question it could be another issue and that issue isn't any better...rod through the block! I've seen a few of them over the years.
