how to test for exhaust donut problems

Fisch137 - Only run your sled if you have the stainless pipe....which you probably don't unless you had the original titanium pipe replaced. Once the donuts start leaking, the clamps around them loosen up and rattle around the pipe, destroying it fairly quickly. $300+ for that damn pipe! The stainless pipe can withstand the abuse of a loose clamp.

I did the wet rag test and my sled kept running like nothing happened.
I'm waiting for new donuts right now.
My sled felt sluggish this year in the middle and top end.
Also rpms had dropped slightly.

Thanks for the advise guys, I think I will tear down and fix the problem. Did you guys just replace the Y pipe with a stainless pipe for peace of mind or only if it was cracked??

I lost the titanium pipes twice...first time Yamaha covered the part, second time I replaced it with the stainless pipes which were then available. I was told that when the donuts blow again (inevitable), the stainless pipes won't be damaged by the loose clamps rattling around.

Can someone verify this?

when does it back fire? after acceleration i get one pop every now and then seems to be getting more frequent, i also notice the gauges fogging up often. i dont get smoke by the handlebars but i notice it sometimes neasr the front of the headlight area. i once took the air box of to try and see where it was coming from and it appeared to be coming from the hose inside the airbox or maybe under the airbox assembly. and about the clamp rattling, can u hear this? i got off my sled a few times and looked in the suspension cause i kept thinking i heard what sounded like a chain dangling or rattling almost like car keys jingling?. performance seems allright but im new to apex.
