Well, I did what I wanted to do before "modding" the sled...I put a season(its not quite over yet) on my 06 Apex ER but now I am looking to clutch it. I am really interested in the Ulmer II kit and have talked to Allen.
Here is my dilemma...I have been reading that a clutch kit will take away the "engine braking" that I have come to like very much. As many of you said you use the engine braking to your advantage as I do as well. I get on a sled without engine braking and I want back on the Apex.
For those who have clutched their Apex(s)/Attak...IYO does a clutch kit take away 'all' engine braking? Do you find your self hard on the brakes again? I have been reading some posts that mention the engine braking is "minimized". How much is it "minimized"?
While I am on here...I am trying to justify the cost of a clutch kit. Let me ask you this...(Hypothetical)if you have clutched your present Apex/Attack and lets say it got wrecked or stolen...would you spend the money again to put a clutch kit on your new Apex/Attak?
Thanks guys...

mchimera,
I have a Bender clutch kit on my '06 GT, and I don't think I lost any of the engine braking. I still hardly ever touch the brake lever.I wouldn't worry at all about getting a clutch kit. The added performance of a clutch kit only goes hand in hand with everything else we love about these sleds.

Ulmers Clutch Kit does not eliminate all of the hard backshifting. It does smooth out the backshifting a considerable amount especially when trail riding. You will not be disappointed with this kit, it puts the hp to the track.

i still have the clutch breaking with the ulmer kit although not as much as stock. I am one of the guys that hates it. i wish it got rid of it much more.
but happy with my ulmer setup, i would do it again.

Muskoka, which Fix kit are you running? Am I correct that the Fix kits don't change the helix? I looked at their posts on the board and a helix isn't listed in their description of the kits? thanks, rr.

The helix is not replaced. We only have 1 clutch kit for the apex and one for the Attak. You will see 4-6 sled lengths comapered to a stock and roughly 3-5 on top end with the overdrive ring allowing the bel to be pulled to the top. You get new rollers, split collars, primary and secondary springs, rivets for the weights, gearing, performance belt and a few other things to bring this kit togeather. Any other questions let me know. You will see a big change in the back shift as well with this kit.
Thanks,
