I keep hearing Yamaha's are so heavy.

Weight only matters off trail in the mountains. Trail riding and "normal" use ........... loose 15 lbs off your own body frame if you want lighter. Also, can you tell the difference between a full tank and an empty tank of fuel when riding? Not me.......
I disagree.
Weight matters for anything that involves accelerations, basically anything that is not slow trail cruising...
And yes, I can loose 15 lbs - but I can do that no matter what sled I ride...
And again yes, I can certainly tell the difference between full tank vs empty tank, and ice build-up vs no ice build-up as well...

As I said, I think Yamaha sleds are too heavy. Chassis as well as engine designs. Once this is sorted...

I'm the last to defend yamaha as I really dont care whats under my azz as long as I'm having fun. I honestly cannot dicern any difference on the trail swapping a new ski doo Xp vs my old RX1. I also cannot tell a difference between a full tank and a half a tank of fuel and that is 80lbs roughly.

So for me and my 'uncalibrated' rear end I guess a yamaha is ok for me because it makes me smile when I hit the gas, vs the Xp 800 makes me wonder what all the noise is about and why I'm not seeing the speedo rocket to 100.

Want lighter, look at 08 nytro subfames...light as can be :)

Smooth trail, it's tough to tell light vs. heavy, but the bigger the bumps, the easier it is. More air will make a difference as well. I've been on big muscle type sleds for a long time and appreciate them for what they are (even if they do land with a big thud!). Still, there's nothing quite like stepping off of a sled like that on to a flyweight that you can really toss around. Thinking that's why they offer the big road bikes as well as dirt bikes....tough to condemn one or the other!

The weight issue was used by the competition (we know who)and it stuck. If you are racing guess it is an issue. What we don't hear is the Skidoo dealers with broken frames and motors. Dealer down the road frm my house has got a shop full. So what be your poison ultra-lite based race sled and racers who change parts after every race or a bit more and dependability for trial riding.

I do know I flipped mine back over ontop of me and I could not get out from under it without help

all i know is when i get my nytro stuck in4-5 feet of powder man i need 2 guys to help me...other than that i love my heavy machine!

My buddy was giving me crap on a ride this year about how riding my Nytro was like riding his Edge XC 600 with a 50 lb anchor strapped to it. What's funny is that he weighs 225 lbs and I weigh 170. What's even funnier is how I was looking back wondering where he and everyone else was halfway through our drag race down a runway....lol

I'll take the "weight penalty" of my Yamaha over any other brand any day of the week.

HAH, there not heavy, are they Ribit! I love that some people think that lighter is automatically better. I rode the Viper in Feb. and was amazed at the power difference. NEVER thought I NEEDED more power, but can never go backwards LOL!!

I wonder how much 'weight' is added to stock trail 'race me' sleds that people think they are getting, to make them durable on the track...I hear lots of gusseting, etc...seems more reinforcement adds weight, not taking it away.
Apex's are the best all around sled I've ridden, bar none. Sure, some do some things better, but overall, I wouldn't trade it for anything out there, at this time. Especially not a step backwards into two stroke territory...

I went to Yamaha (05 Vector ER) because I wanted a 4 Stroke and I am very happy with it's performance and don't notice a weight problem. I have several buddies with New Ski-Doos, one E-Tec cought on fire 20 miles out from the dealer first time out and another with a bent tunnel. Now with EPA ready to bring out E-15 and more later as alcohol supplies increase, 2 Strokes could be on their way out. It is interresting to note that Ski-Doo just got a "Bail-Out "of 30 million $$$ from the Canadian Govt. and that is just for starters. Mitt Romney holds 50% of BPR. Could Ski-Doo be on their way out like Chrysler???

Rightarm, very true AC has now took the crown as far as weight is concerned..... Their Turbo is a tank.

But to be honest, we all defend Yamaha because of the very fact that Yamaha makes a very reliable sled. 4 strokes in general are alot heavier, but their is still alot of room their to remove alot of weight. For instance in the chassis alone, between the Nytro and the Apex, there is a 35lb difference. That's alot. Put a lighter seat on and few other things in the chassis that can be improved and lighten the front and rear suspension and it will be alot better. If ski-doo can make a 500lb 4 stroke the first shot out, then I'm sure Yamaha can do it. I'm not saying the 1200 is the ideal sled, but as far as weight is concerned on a 4 stroke, it's pretty good and before you say that the XP chassis is like tinfoil, then you are all to bias. It's not that bad. It's not worse then the 09 Nytro's. The Nytro is close to the weight, but their still needs improvement, but it's close. Closer then the Apex...

A lighter sled is always better for riding. You cannot tell me a heavier sled is better. That is just not true... Not saying I would go back to DOO, but I would like to see Yamaha lighten up their sleds some more, especially when the Nytro is that much lighter then the Apex. I also am confident they will get their, but a little quicker then waiting another 5 years would be nice.

I agree SF regardless of what make the 4 strokes are king.My issue is these sled are already $17,000 cdn if the manufacturers start whittiling down the weights with exotic materials it won't take long before they are in excess of $20,000 and I feel that would hurt sled sales even further.I feel that if anything the Apex needs more HP.I feel that Yamaha has the technology and the R&D to not only make the Apex lighter and with a tad bit more hp but keep the pricing within the reality of ownership.I know 2011 will be the year for the Apex it's will only be a matter of patience.Unless I find some real good deals on some 2010's.Yamaha will introduce the 4 valve motor into the Apex which would bring signifigant weight loss.

"KANDO"

All I know is that we are all damned lucky these things ARE heavy. They already blow the snowflaps off of just about everything out there on the lakes, if they were lighter they would be ouright DANGEROUS! I think the heavier weight makes them ride better. Also, what the hell is the difference what the sled weighs while carrying my 300lb buttox around?? :exc: Wig
