I take my Attak in for a yearly service and was told this...

The more I think about this it could be possible. Last year when I bought the sled I went through and serviced it myself. I even changed the coolant because when I opened up the coolant it had oil on top. So I took a syringe and sucked it up trying to skim the oil on top of the coolant reservoir. My thought was some ding dong put 2 stroke oil in the coolant on accident and it won't mix with the coolant. So I drained the coolant and put new in. Since I filled it back up and ran it there was still more oil on top of the coolant. I thought it was just impossible to flush and get out and was in the hoses and reservoir. Anyway a head gasket would make sense in this case. He called me Friday and said he had to order a head gasket so I'll just go down there and check it out on Monday morning and see what it looks like. The sled has always ran great, and never smoked or anything.

Not too sure a head gasket would cause oil in your coolant?? Normally a blown head gasket symptoms are white smoke and coolant loss and bubbles in the coolant (over-pressurized). Normally oil in your coolant is from a cracked oil cooler that is cooled by your engine coolant. Not too many other places your coolant and engine oil come close unless your looking at a cracked block internally, but that is a long shot.

cmharcou,

You bought the sled last year and its an 07?, was it still new or slightly used when you bought it? If used, it could be possible someone had a turbo installed and returned to stock. If thats the case, then your head gasket would have most likely been tampered with and most likely never ran afterwards till you bought it.

Depending on where the head gasket is blown it can definitely allow oil into the coolant! Between a water jacket and oil return passage for example. You can also get the opposite happening of coolant into your oil. Hopefully they will be able to find the fault in the head gasket and that will tell the story!

I called back today and found it is what not the head gasket. It was just an exhaust pipe gasket. I'm pretty sure he told me head gasket but anyway the panic is over. He's about got it back together. Sorry for the mess up. I am going to talk to him about the a little oil in the coolant and see where that could of came from. I'm still thinking someone started to pour 2 cycle in it on accident. Like a buddy or something just trying to help out forgetting it was a 4stroke.

I think that 2-cycle oil in your coolant is a very big longshot!!! I would definatley investigate it especially if you cleared it and it came back, unfortunatley engines dont fix themselves, that would be a warning sign for any mechanic to find out how it got there before your stuck in the middle of no were with a blown engine.
That was fun though, trying to guess what it actually was and if you were getting bent over a barrel. An exhaust gasket LOLOL. Ok someone start another exciting post I just need to be occupied for another 30 days.

Good to hear! ;)!

If the oil does reappear (either a leak or residual left over 2 stroke) you can get oil analysis kits to capture the oil and have it sampled to see what it is. If you are getting oil in your coolant somewhere it can build up and block the small passages in your exchangers and overheat your motor. Just something you will have to watch for.

Ok update 2 years later. I think all along there was a head gasket problem. Going back and re reading my own threads. I got oil and water in the crank case again. I'm thinking head gasket for sure now. Bringing it home to work on it myself.

Dont forget about possibility of it being the oil cooler.Have the cooling system pressure tested. If done by a expert they may be able to tell where the leak is before you remove anything other than radiator cap and the plugs.

Another thing to think about when you find the source of the problem and get it fixed is flushing the cooling system to get the oil out. Coolant in an oil system will puddle at the lowest point and drain out. Oil in a cooling system will cling and stick to things and not come out very easy. I think they have flushed cooling system's in my trucks that had fuel in them from bad injector cup's with Bopeep or any non foaming detergent that will break down grease/oil.

What and where can I get that done at? No yammie dealers near me. Can an auto dealer do that?

I you like doing your own work, you can purchase a pressure tester from an auto parts store, or you could dye the system, and black light it....also purchased from an auto parts store.
