Yamaha is really bad at admitting a problem, but I cant say the other company's are better. I had an rx-1 and last year I drove a newer sled with a forward riding position and decided time to get a newer sled, but wanted to stay with the 4-stroke. Looked at Yamaha and wasn't excited about the artic cat deal, have had real bad luck with them in the past. So I looked at used market and found a nice nytro xtx at a nice price and picked it up. First weekend out no problem, next week it was -15 and nytro kept overheating, so cut my trip short and dropped the sled at a dealer close to where I was, told him the problem and wanted him to go though the sled and check the cooling system.
Called half though the week and he told me everything checks out ok, the tunnel was just full of ice. I then did a search online and found this site and saw pages and pages on this problem and how people are trying to fix. There was so many different things people were doing trying to solve this I decided to call Yamaha directly and get there input on the best thing I should do. The first call I got some women and you could hear here typing as we were talking, I told what was going on and she told me there was no record of a problem with the nytro and overheating, I asked for someone that might have personal experience with this snowmobile. She asked for my number and would have a rep call me, I picked up my sled that weekend and the dealer told me he had a nytro himself in the past and it did the same thing, when it was really cold the snow would melt on the exhaust and freeze fast over the cooler and form a ice dam which would block the snow getting to the cooler, said he just carried a rubber hammer and would tap on the tunnel once and awhile when it was really cold.
One Monday got a call back from the rep and though talking to him he says he has never heard of this problem before? Told him why don't he come on this site and read the many pages of people talking about this. His response "you cant put any value on what you read on-line, most of that is people that don't even own a Yamaha trying to make them look bad". I told him what the dealer said and he wanted the name of the dealer because he wanted to talk to him cause he must know something that Yamaha doesn't, 2 weeks later I stopped at that dealer asked if anyone contacted him, nope! I was getting frustrated but never lost my temper and asked if there was someone I could talk to that maybe helped designs snowmobiles, he gave me a number after leaving a message I got a call back from a guy that said he helped design the nytro, after talking to him(he was very nice), he told me the same thing NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. I explained to every person the sled was out of warranty, I was not looking for them to cover just help on best fix, but it seams like everyone I talked to had a sticky note on there screen saying company policy NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM.
I have since then done a few things to the sled I have found on here but haven't had the cold temps yet to see if it helped. The thing is we are used to car company's having a problem with a sticky gas pedal in five cars and the government stepping in and saying they have to put a recall on every car with that system, not that I want the government involved.
I travel and stop at dealers all over and just look and shoot the bull. and what I find funny is some dealers say they have never heard of a problem with the 14 viper, some say yes there is a recall on this but never heard of that, and the next dealer it is some other thing, my brother bought one of these last year and I witnessed hot start problems, chaincase, and his muffler blew out and he never received a recall from Yamaha, just another trip to the dealer and another fix.
I would have a lot of respect for Yamaha if they just said yes we have heard of this and we put a team on it and found this to be the best fix, maybe something on there website where you could put in your serial number and maybe the problem and they could email you back, maybe if there is a recall then some thing you could print out and just take to your dealer and would help on getting everyone on the same page. Maybe if they took ownership of some of these problems I might even consider spending $12000 on a YAMICAT

You mean Catamaha, like my bud says if you put a Cummins in a Dodge its still a Dodge! But hey you should have bought the Catamaha cause in all my years of riding Cat they where quick to recall unlike Yamaha. I sometimes think this has led to some who claim Yamaha is perfect because of no recalls. I know better! No sled is perfect!
As far as the Nytro went I guess you should have read here first or bought an Apex XTX, no problem with ice buildup with mine but like my buddy I carry a plastic hammer to knock out ice in the morning. Nature of the under seat exhaust but wait I used to knock out ice from under my Cat as well because of those tunnel coolers.

Larryh I agree with you, the Reps think we are idiots. Yamaha knows there are problems, but enough people have to complain about it for them to justify the cost of a fix. Not enough people complain of a belt issue, it all depends on how you ride. If you are not on and off the gas and not WFO then belts last so the few of us that ride like we stole the sled have issues. I personally think Yamaha got screwed by the belt manufacture because this belt doesn’t wear out it glazes over and starts to slip and for me 500 miles it was all over the slipping would start and the RPMs would be all over. For some reason Yamaha figured it would be cheaper to have a new belt then move the motor. Or maybe they couldn’t move the motor who knows. I spent the money and went with the ULMER fix.

I guess this may be a little off topic but I am curious if the 8JP belt can be scuffed up and cleaned with scotch bright pad once it "glazes over" ? I only have about 10 miles on my new Viper so I am going to wait and see how the 8JP belt works for me before deciding if I want to spend the money to retrofit to the 8DN set-up.

Blue you are in the break in period so you won't see any problem until after that. I tried to clean the first belt it didn't work I used 3 belts in 2200 miles and all the belts were still looking good but slipped.

This is a well done post. I have never owned a Nytro but my Apex and Attak had 100% glycol coolant and did much better after draining and filling systems with 50/50 right out of the bottle and a little Water/Wetter. Many will say add a rear cooler and problem solved and I won't refute that but my problem seems solved with just the coolant and not haveing to add the the hardware. Because I never gave much thought to owning a Nytro I haven't obsessed over its section on this site but contrary to what Yamaha and its reps think or say you would be hard pressed to find any other site on the Internet regarding any topic that is more helpful in its intended way than this site does to help us Yamaha sledders diagnose and resolve issues with our equipment.Yamaha is really bad at admitting a problem, but I cant say the other company's are better. X2 on the full strength glycol on my '07 Apex GT. That sled overheated from day one until I diluted the glycol mixture to 50/50, added Water Wetter, and added the rear heat exchanger. I did this all by myself at my own expense without asking for it to be covered by Yamaha.
I heard later here on TY that some other Apex owners were successful in getting Yamaha to pay for the rear heat exchanger. I asked my dealer about this and he went to bat for me with Yamaha and I was reimbursed for the rear heat exchanger!
My dealer also pushed through several other warranty claims for me during the 5 years of warranty I had on that sled. Some of the warranty claims were a bit questionable but he was able to get them approved including a torn seat cover literally on the last day of my YES coverage!
My point is that having a good dealer is absolutely critical to getting Yamaha to resolve issues on your sled. The dealer has so much more influence than you do and therefore will have a greater chance of successfully resolving issues.
The other point to take from this is if you find a good dealer that will fight for you, then be loyal to him with your business! I have bought my past several sleds from the same dealer along with countless $'s in parts, accessories, clothing, etc. I could have saved some $'s by shopping around and buying from others but I wanted to show my dealer that I appreciated his efforts on my behalf and that I valued our business (and personal) relationship.

Blue you are 100% right and my dealer is great he will take the shirt off his back for his costumers. The Reps today are not like the days of the old where a Rep would actually take a look at your sled if you were at a show. I had an issue with a new sled and the Reps went and sinked the carbs on my sled out in the parking lot in Old Forge NY. The sled ran perfect after that and this is why I am so upset, today they just say "NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM".

yep, i will be happy to pay more and shop more if the dealer is a service person. I hate those dealers that don't even know what they sell, and don't care after you have paid.
Give me good service and i will come back to spend my money. We don't have a yamaha dealer like that around here so i by most off my parts and stuff from usa or canada. And i have 99% good experience on my shopping from usa and canada. Here in norway i have almost the opposite experience, Norway
on good service
I do have a ski-doo dealer in my home "town" and by whatever i can from them because they give me good service and i have even borrowed their shop too wrench on my yamaha several times

I have had to knock the ice out of tunnels on air cooled sleds as well. Only thing that helped a bit was spraying Pam or cooking oil on the tunnel. It would take longer to ice up but it still would.

I am experimenting with spray dielectric grease trying to prevent the front door on my Floe Protektor from freezing down. It actually seems to be working which is a bit surprising considering I did not get everything thawed and dry before spraying.

With regards to the ice build up discussion. I used this on my snow blower and it worked well in some wet sticky snow.
I think that spraying this in your tunnel would help reduce the ice accumulation.
Happy New Year! Let's hope that 2-15 brings us some much needed snow!

Will that stuff work on drop doors on trailers??? sometimes mine freeze and it would be nice to have something to coat it with so it opens easier when water gets on the seals and freezes.

I don't see why not. It is certainly worth a try. I bought my can at Menards but I would think that you can find it at at Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, etc. I don't remember exactly what I paid but it wasn't that expensive. I will try it on my sled if I ever get enough snow to need it!
