I relly don't see why everyone is making such a big deal about to 2010's. last time I checked, no much could keep up with the Apex, shur its a heavy tank, but a fast one none the less. As far as the Nytro, it had issues in 08', and Yamaha did the right thing and fixed it (mostly), again, seems nothing will touch the Nytro till 80+mph. The Phazer is the best bang for your buck entry level sled out. (aside from a mini)
As far as Ski-doo, Polaris, and Cat, they are great sleds no dout. If they sold junk, they would be out of the biz. Lets not forget that Yamaha is proven reliabile, HONDO showed us that. The Rev XR 1200 is really the only sled out that has me worried, however the reliability has not been proven to me yet.
Further more, I'll admit, I was alittle let down with the new year lineup. But we can only blame ourselves. We where the ones who talked up this "new sled" not Yamaha. We based this sled off of our wishes, not cold facts. I feel that if anyone wants to cry about what Yamaha is offering, biuld you own, or go somewhere else.

To put some of this into perspective, a quote from the Yamablog (my bold):

No Pretty Pictures
Now I’m looking at some interesting stats on Yamaha. The global revenue was down in the first nine months of the year (less than 4% but nonetheless down) mostly blamed on slumping North American and Euro sales. The company generated a nine month revenue of just over 13 billion USD or 1.3 trillion Yen. I can tell you one thing for sure, those clams weren’t harvested selling snowmobiles! Motorcycle sales were down in NA about 20% as were ATV / Snowmobile but overall motorcycles saved the day with similar increases elsewhere.
To put things in perspective Yamaha sold close to 4.5 million motorcycles in those same nine months which was up from the previous years nine month yield of 3.7 million bikes. Now where did all those motorcycles go you ask? Good question.
117,00 motorcycles were imported to North America and about 300,00 made it to Europe. That still leaves about 4 million and change elsewhere… read: Asia. The forecast sees the year ending at 6 million motorcycles sold and 17 billion in the coffers. Not bad for a down year I guess. Now lets get back to snowmobiles. Last time I checked the totals it appears world wide sales for all sleds combined (that’s at least 5 manufacturers) adds up to about 160,000 units.
Let me see now 6 million bikes versus 160,000 sleds. That’s very humbling math for a former product manager! So where am I going with all this you ask? Well I really don’t know but the numbers are public and thought provoking to say the least.
cheers cr

Seems the money is not to be made in the snowmobile industry, rather in motorcycles. Stands the reason Yamaha does not produce a new model every 2-3 years at $200million per model+- Humm..........

Thats what I have been saying all a long...snowmobiles are a needle in the hay stack when it comes to Yamaha. Go to the yamaha website and look at everything yamaha produces.

Wondering why Yamaha came out with two mountain Nytro's for 2010?
"In the U.S. and Canadian markets, the cross
country and mountain segments did the
largest volume of business for Ski-Doo, not
unlike the industry at-large, says Francois
Trembley, director of Ski-Doo marketing."
Read the whole pdf of the big four sales figure for the last 12 years. It comes from shortstop20 on the 2 stroke side.

Crewchief47,
You can see why there are forces deep within Yamaha management that want to get out of the snowmobile biz........This is fact, not speculation on my part...........

Really doesn't mean much as I would think there are just as many at other OEM's wanting to get out of one of the segments their in.....

With the dollar tanking against the yen, and given job losses across the US, and given the unprecedented loss of consumer confidence, and given the obvious decrease in discretionary consumer spending, I too will be surprised if Yamaha sells any sleds. Those are circumstances beyond their control, however. In this global recession, with the US teetering on the edge of full-blown depression, Yamaha would be absolutely irresponsible if they tried to bring in a new product lineup. Many other Japanese companies are closing ranks, freezing market lineups and raising prices too.TurboJamie said:Anyone defending has no reason to, it was plain and simple a let down. Everyone wanted a new apex LAST year and was let down. WOW 2 in a row, be surprised if they sell many new sleds at all next season. Also unless it was forgotten there is no Mountain Apex listed on the Canadian Yamaha Site.
Best to stand pat on a lineup whose assembly line, part acquisition, and marketing is already paid for. If they brought out a new lineup, it would cost them MORE money that they might never get a chance to recoup. This is the only move Yamaha could have made, and people who think otherwise don't understand the current global economic situation.

Great article, but boy do they have the representing colors of each manufacture backwards.
