Which style of ice scratchers are better the spring style (Scorchers where you can also use the additional idler wheel) or the cable style (Tric). Looking at installing these on my VK Professional.

I read somewhere that Yamaha updated the cable type to add more down force and the nice thing about them is that you can reverse without retracting them but I haven't heard anyone's feedback yet. I have the type that are mounted on the running boards but they put a lot of stress on the aluminum when they are retracted, I would go with the ski mounted ones next time.

I have the cable type (tric) that I installed last year. Some people have complained about them beating the cr#p out of the back of their skis and belly pan but I haven't had any problems so far. I think some guys have problems when they put too much down pressure on them which makes them bounce around.
The up-side is that they don't break when you back up but they don't throw as much snow as other types

I am using the Hartman Ice Scratchers that attach to the ski bolts. Work very nicely including spraying the runningboard coolers. Just don't go in reverse. I use the "spring thing" to lift them on or off so I don't bend them.

Just got the Tric scratchers and put them on. They are the updated versions with the plastic over the cables. I will report on them after the weekend.

x 2 on the new design from Yamaha. I'll report back and try and link a scan of the literature after the weekend. Boy, looks like we might need it.

Is this "another" new design? I thought I had the updated ones but there is no plastic over my cables

No, the new ones have a plastic sheath to stop them from moving too much. The original ones were recalled because of too much bouncing around (read doing damage). Mine new ones are red. I too will report on them this weekend.

I have the cable ones that I put on my new sled this year before the season got started. I only needed to use them a little bit last week on one trail that was hard pack (no ice). I have mine mounted on the skid rails behind the front idler wheels. They did not bounce around and hit anything. They just dug into the snow and work as I had hoped. I can't say how they will work on ice. I did have an issue when I placed the end on the rail with them gauging the aluminum. I'd take a picture to show, but the sleds are locked up on the trailer now. I did buy some SS eye bolts that I will open up to form a hook and mount them so the scratcher end can sit on them and not the rail. When I have it down I will post a picture.

Well, We gave the new scratchers a run and they seem to work great. They didn't loosen and they didn't bang the crap out of the bottom of the machine. Did about 100km. I mounted then to the sway bar link like the instructions said.
