installing new track

I am changing the track in my viper..first timer. I have replaced the track and am in the proccess of reinstalling the chain case. Does the drive shaft bearing on the speedo side stick out about half the width of bearing on the speedo side? Also on the chain case side it appears that the drive shaft isn't completely flush with with the gear..ie the gear sticks out from the drive shaft just a little..about 1/16 of an inch. Does this sound right..I should have paid closer attention before I took it apart.

Hello tubbs and welcome to the forum,

Although I never changed the track on a viper before but have many times on my srx and RX-1. On the speedo side it sounds like you have the bearing in the right spot. When you install the speedo cover on, the indented part compensates to have the bearing in line with the frame and will fall into place when put together. (Don’t forget the 2 set screws on the bearing collar). As far as the chain case gears goes, it sounds like your ready to roll! That 1/16th of an inch gap seems to be normal from my experiences.

I thought this was right. The gaps from the sides of the track to the tunnel looked identical. Now i get to do it again on a 97xtc with reverse. I think the reverse will make it a little more complicated. Thanks for the post.

Yeah, reverse is a pain to take apart. Just take your time and don't try to force anything. Also be mindful for the little things, like a really tiny spring between a couple of BIG parts. Also remember to remove the reverse linkage BEFORE splitting the case.

When putting it back together, torque in this order to gain proper alignment. Back half of chaincase, lower sprocket, upper sprocket, front half of chaincase, secondary set screws(non rx sleds) the 3 nuts that hold the speedo bearing in, and to finish it up, the set screws on the speedo bearing itself.
