Is Odometer Data Stored in Speedo Unit or ECU?

If a sled is missing an instrument cluster, is there any way to accurately determine the miles on the machine?

If the odometer data is stored in the ECU memory I figured one could just plug in a spare gauge cluster and the mileage would be displayed on on the replacement cluster.

Its on the speedo unit. If your sled has 10,000 miles replace with a 1000 mile one and no one is the wiser, sucks it works that way.

Would a dealer not be able to see the hours on a motor when he plugs into the ECU?

The dealer can plug into the ECU and download a lot of info. Don't know about the odo reading, but my dealer told me he knows if a sled has rolled, there is a sensor for that and it shows when he connects the computer to the sled.

There is no plugging into the ECU on Yamaha sleds its not possible. All of the ECU info is displayed through the dash using DIAG mode.

Also there is no way that a dealer would be able to tell if your seld rolled over. There is no tip over switch on a sled and this is why they will starve for oil and blow up. They only way the could maybe assume it rolled was if the drop in oil perssure was detected by the ecu and it shuts down the motor and stores a code 30.

I just talked to a family freind who owns and operates a yamaha dealer and he said the same as you. Its all in the speedo. Man, yamaha should have thought that out alittle better for us folk who by used...

There may be some out there but AFAIK, nobody stores mileage info. in the PCM for any vehicle. Just went through this in my Ford truck and everything is stored in the cluster. Companies have very little concern for used vehicles as they are in the business of selling new. The few that are tampered with are isolated and not worth the cost to implement security measures. As for everything in life, everything comes down to $.

If you are buying a used sled you can have a dealer call the vin number in and find out what warranty work was done on the sled. Dealers always record the mileage and date of service. At least you'd have some idea if the odometer was accurate.
