I am looking for advice!

Has anyone done the bearings on the jackshaft or mainshaft and if so at what kms or miles.
I have 11,000kms on my 06 and wondering if I should tear her down to do these bearings. Has anyone had trouble or how long can I expect to get out of these. One third of these miles would be hauling.

I know I will have to haul out the skid and check, grease or replace some of those bearings.

Tell me what I should do!

I would change them both. The achilles heel of the VK is the clutch side bearing on the drive shaft. The VK pro thankfully has a slightly bigger bearing than the 540 fan but it should be check/changed regularly. I changed mine last year at around the 5K mark. It's cheap preventive maintenance. I've seen a few let go and it's not something you want to change in the bush. It makes an awful mess of the cab.

Thanks guys!

I would like to here from some guys that have a lot of mileage on their machines.

Good advise though I will do it for the piece of mind if nothing else.

Boy, it must be my lucky day. ;)! Three for the price of one.....

All three of you, please take the time to update your location in your profile. Thanks!

Bearing Replacement

After some thought and your advise I decided to check the bearings in on the main shaft and jack shaft. My machine had 11000kms or just over 6000miles. The jack shaft (clutch side) dry bearing was fine and like new and both bearings in the chain case was of course fine, constantly running in oil. I pulled out the seals in the bearing then cleaned and repacked with new grease.
The main shaft bearing (speedo side) dry side the grease was little gray showing a little water entery. I replaced this bearing with new just for a piece of mind, however could of cleaned and reused also. And again the chain case side was fine and with that bearing running with both seals in, oil still penetrated.
I think if a person pulled out the seals, clean and repack the bearings on these shafts they should last a very long time if not the life of the machine.

As like others the first bearing to fail on the undercariage was the middle wheel at the very rear, then I lost a rear wheel totally. I replaced these outside wheels with wheels that have replaceable bearings. The remainder of the nineteen wheels had seals pulled out cleaned, repacked and seals reinstalled for the second time. If this wasn't done at around the 4700 km mark then I would think I would have lost most of them long before now. I doubt if I will get much more than another 2500 kms from most of them.

I had to replace most of the teflon bushings also, especialy on the shocks and both ends of the flat bars. The bushings at the frame end of the front end control arms were also worn very bad.

With the design of this machine the front end and suspension should be torn down at the 5000km mark. Bearings and bushings should be checked, repack all bearings and replace worn bushings. If someone runs this machine past that mark without any maintenance to these parts then they run a great risk of failure on the trail.

Gill_VK06 - Where did you find the wheels with replaceable bearings that you used to replace the non-replacables? Are they Yamaha parts?

Bearing Replacement

The rear idlers I got from the dealer, they look identical but they are not Yamaha. Not sure the name. If you know a machinist he can make the rest replaceable by machining the plastic around the bearing and installing a snap ring.
