I was working on changing the bearing and I decided to check the manual and I see that I have to buy some tools. Im not worried about that but here is my problem.
The manual shows a collar on the secondary side with a nut and I can not see a nut. What I do see is that the collar is on the back side of the bearing and does not look like the manual. I dont know if I am looking at it wrong or if its screwed up.
Do I have to get a speacial socket for the top gear to get it off? Also are the tools available at the dealer and are they going to be outragous. Thanks for any help on this because I feel that it is kicking my a$$.

Their is a collar with 2 Allen screws. Just an Allen key required.

What year is the sled? If it's anything newer than an '03, you'll have a nut on the engine side of the jackshaft bearing that's securing the collar (which is on the secondary side of the bearing). I'm not sure of the 'orthodox' way of getting that nut off, but the way I did it was to use an angled pry bar and position it down the side of the bulkhead and fit it into the grooves of the locking nut. From there, you simply pound on the grooves and eventually it will back off; releasing the collar.
To remove the top gear, you can do what I did and buy a big cresent wrench. Try to get one at a discount place as they'll be a lot cheaper there.

Forgot to add, that in order to turn that lock nut on the other side of the bearing (engine side), you've got to hold the collar (secondary side). There are two openings 180 degrees apart on that collar. I simply wedged something in the opening and wedged the other end up against the upper footwell. I happened to use a standard file. It's was the perfect length (approx. 12") and the handle end fit right into one of the grooves on the collar.

Sorry I forgot to mention that it is an 03. Ecopter , the way you describe it is like it looks like in the manual. Mine looks nothing like it with the exception of the collar and it looks like it is backwards because the main part is on the engine side of the bearing with a split down the middle.
Is this the upgrade that I have heard about and can I put 04 or newer bearing on it. The collar is what looks like its worn and not the bearing.
Next stupid question is how to get the nut off of the gear? I have an adjustable wrench that fits but I couldnt get it to budge. What do you hold on to to get the nut off. Dont want to break anything for using the wrong thing to hold on to.
Thanks again for the help.

Your '03 definitely doesn't have the update for the '04 and beyond. I don't have my old one I took off in front of me, but I think it does have a split down the middle and it is supposed to be on the inside. You'll want to buy the updated items for this which include a new collar and locking nut and several washers that go between the collar and the secondary. Port Yamaha could set you up with all the proper stuff.
That upper gear nut is torqued pretty good. Since your brake disc is off, you'll have to have someone hold your secondary clutch, and or (carefully) wedge something in on the drivers underneath. This will prevent the whole thing from turning. Definitely get a new jackshaft bearing. Don't get an aftermarket one because that bearing is tapered on the inner race. Just spend the money to get the Yamaha part and you'll have an easier time with it.

I have bought two there and have had good luck and bad luck with their service. It all depends on who works on it. I talked to Maxx yesterday and he said he wouldnt touch it until mid Nov. I am not really worried about the warr. because I want to change all of them even though they arent bad yet. I just cant get the top sprocket off so I am going to order the hex to hold the secondary shaft. I hope I can get the shaft out if I take the gear and bearing off through the brake side. I had two other people help hold the secondary and still didnt get it to budge and I am the smallest one of the three, and I weigh about 200.

Wow ! That nut's on there.
Max has treated me well, and I had great service from him when I needed it fast. Don't know if I'd buy another one from him just because of the location, but I'd consider it.
Good luck with the project. I enjoy working on them, but only if I know it's going to be a positive outcome.

You will need to replace the nut when you get done but I have found that an air chisel used on the corners of the flats of a nut will loosen them when all else fails... just be careful.

on the top gear I have used a plastic handled screw driver to wedge in between the chain and gear to hold it while loosening the nut, have somebody holding the secondary at the same time should be able to get it loose.
I just finshed tonight chaning both brgs on the clutch side. The brg has not changed up from 03,04,05. All the same number, only difference is that 04/05 have a threaded wedge/with nut. The upper chaincase nut is torgue to 65ftlbs. I just borrowed the dealers tools. There is real deep socket, then a socket that fits of the clutch splines. If you can't get the tools, just get a wrench, somebody to hold the sec, then hit the wrench with a hammer. I know it sounds bad, but it will work, trust me. Did it in the parking lot of a hotel. Other than those sockets, 12mm, 14mm wrenchs/sockets, torx bit #20. Not to bad. Other than the stuipd wedge/collar on the sec side. They need either make the shaft bigger, or the brg center fit the shaft. And make it greaseable.
