I've done some research, and I understand the physical difference between the '03 and '04 mounting, but I haven't tried it yet, and I have some questions:
1. The dealer didn't seem to think the mounting was a big issue. Is there a danger of the '03 style coming loose? It's pressed on, isn't it? Or does it simplify future service?
2. Is there something special about the bearing, or is it just a standard 6206 (or was it 6208, couldn't quite read thru the packaging). At $54, it seems a little steep, unless it's a special bore or something. Or is this like the $60 driveshaft bearing that you can buy at any bearing shop for $20?

I can't answer all of your questions as mine was covered under warranty i can tell you that it is an issue with the 03's just the way it's designed and the torque these things put out causes the collar to work it's way loose. After a while it will wear through the washer between it and the secondary and start chewing at the clutch, after it works it way out enough the jack shaft will start to wobble which takes out the bearing and if bad enough the jackshaft. I have witnessed this while it happened on two 03's now! Do your self a favor and put in the locking collar

It is a special bearing, not just a normal 6206. The inner bore is tapered so it fits the tapered collar that fits between the bearing and the shaft. Because of this if you are changing the bearing make sure you install it the right way. ( big side of taper facing clutch)

Mine came out, and caused the secondary to fall off. I tapped it back in with the secondary, and locked the secondary in place. No problem since. I installed a belt adjuster which locks the secondary, and allows you to adjust your belt to the right height in seconds. This is the 3rd sled I have used the same adjuster on. The racers say it's better to have a locked secondary.
