Picked up the new RX last Wednesday. Man, what a smooth running engine. I took a spin around the back yard today. I don't have another Yamaha to compare it to, but punching it while rolling really showed how much wieght transfer was there. The rear end squatted hard and the skis were up about a foot  I hadn't touched any adjustments in the #*$&@ end so I don't have any idea were it is but it sure reacted with alot more authority than my XC 800 did with the M-10. Sure sound sweet too :4STroke: I think I'll keep ;)! it

Musky Hunter, I can see you're excited, it shows on the avatar. What do you think of the new adjustment on the skid. I didn't go to the spring show. No grease zerks on the skid either? How often does one need to change the bushings?

Adjustment seems like it will work good. The dial is big enough to comfortably move w/ a glove. I just hope its durable. :o| Other than monkeying with the dial, I havent messed with the pre-load or the transfer rod. Its tough to see what these do w/o snow :o| .
There aren't any grease fittings on the skid that I can see. The only ones I see are on the front spindles. I won't miss having to grease under there but again, I hope its sealed well enough so you aren't changing bushings/bearings every year. Are there any zerks on the older skids?

I knew someone would have to rip around the yard that didnt take long hehe. Are the suspensions stiffer than the ones at the shows because i sat on a couple and they went to the ground and i only weigh 120 lbs?

Yes there are grease zerks on the older skids, possibly six. I haven't looked since March when I last greased it. Hopefully the bushings last a while. I too would rather not grease all the time, but, I'd rather grease than replace bushings. I guess we will hear the results after this season.

Yes TopGun, the spring on the show sled was very soft. I too jumped on it and it slammed down - i'm 280lbs. My new sled doesn't show any of that. I'm not gonna fiddle w/ the skid too much until the snow flies though :D I am going to throw 96 studs down the center. I haven't heard of anyone having problems w/ that amount. Plus you would think the 1.25 Ripsaw hooks up even better than previous RX tracks so not quite as many studs are in order. :flag:

Be careful, part of the reason people use at least 144 is so that no individual stud has to do that much work. This is why the stud makers spec one per horsepower.

I'd do 144 or 192. I have 192 that I haven't installed yet. I'm so lazy right now I'll probably wait til the snow gets here, then complain I wasn't getting this done in the warmer months.

I installed 144 studs down the center of track when I replaced stock with Camo 9818. Seemed to be just right. Enough traction on the ice and still not enough to prevent me from pushing the rear end around in the corners; although not studding on the outside helps in this are too. That's the reason I went with 144. I knew I wasn't studding the outside and didn't want to under stud.

I ran 126 in my Warrior which is just a few more than 96 in a 121 inch with zero issues. I liked it much better than the 192 I ran in my RX-1.

Out of curiousity, why do some run the studs down the middle? I haven't studded mine yet, but have always ran them close to the hyfax for better penetration. Maybe its my riding style.

The reason people stud only in the middle are:

  • 1) track damage from studs seems to occur much more often on the outside portion of the track
    2) you can still slide the back end a little
I did 96 down the middle last season and couldn't be happier. No track or stud damage.
