Ive heard some say that K&N and other reusable air filters dont filter as well and let dirt into an engine.
What do you think about this claim?

I just purchased a k+n air box filter, and k+n powerlid filter with outerware. Im under the impression that if you run an outerware, youll trap whatever is missed by the filter. My research lead me to believe that where you ride and type of contaminants decide the effectiveness of the filter. Im hoping to have maximum airflow and and protection on my Raptor. Now if my filters, slip on, and jet kit would arrive, id be a happy guy. Damn US-CANADA shipping is slow.

I read a test where several different filters were tested for trucks. (Cummins) They used a flow device that was able to measure total flow and aslo measured the amount of dust that passed through. The K&N flowed the most air and the most dust. I think that in a clean environment or wet such as mud that K&N would be great.

Where I live we got dumped on by Mt.St.Helens in 1980 and that dust is like very fine flower here in the summer. I use oiled foam. Stockers work good and my preference is Twin Air. After reading the test I took a brand new one off the 01 shee I had and went back to stock.

Just my $0.02 :D

I agree with clutch, i have read to many bad things about them! Just watch there new TV commercial and they call it the best air induction system? Not a mention was made about filtering capabilities? I think they know people are wise to them now and they are afraid to talk about filtering qualities? Check this link out:

Irv, that is nearly the same test I saw. The only difference was that some different brands were tested. The results are the same. Good quality paper is the best and that is what I use on my truck and car. I don't like wet paper on a bike or quad so I use oiled foam.

Irv, thats the test that really got my attention.
If I were had a quad that was all modded-out I could see running a K&N but for a trail quad I'll gladly take the decreased flow and greater filtering ability of a OEM paper filter.
Anybody want a K&N airfilter that fits a Ford F-150 with a 5.4L V8? Im putting the OEM paper filter back in my truck!

Captain unless your doing a lot of dusty road driving your K&N will probably not hurt anything. A lot of people are using them and not having any problems, but it might make a good garage sale item if you are like me and really want what filters best. If your racing or street crusing they are great.

Hey, check this out! I pulled the K&N out of my truck the other day, and the intake runner (black plastic tubing that goes from the airbox to the intake manifold) has all full of dust!
Ive been talking to a lot of people who MX and XC race their 450s and it seems like almost all of them recommend the foam (UNI) filters. A few of them run K&Ns, but those are the guys who are full factory-sponsored and if they puke a motor, its no biggie because they dont pay the bills.

Well Captain it looks like you asked the right question at the right time. It's a good thing you caught it. I'm sure K&N would say a little fine dust is normal. :moon:

LOL...Maybe, but Im pretty anal when it comes to my stuff.
I will gladly give up a little flow to gain more filtering ability.
