Sorry for posting an arctic cat question here!!

My buddy gave me an old kitty cat for my 4 year old to use. It needed a lot of work! I had this thing totally apart. Clutch, recoil, brake, suspension(if you'd call it that),carbs, etc.... now this thing runs like a champ. It'll lift the skis wiyh me on it. Until it runs for about 5 minutes. Then it bogs down and stalls. When you try to start it , it yanks the rope right out of your hand. It will start and run fast if you start it witht the throttle open, but as soon as you back off it will bog down and stall. Let it cool down and it's great again for a couple of minutes. Does anybody have any clues as to what the problem could be. Again I'm sorry for asking arctic cat questions here but this is the best sight I've seen and I have a very dissappointed 4 year old at home.

It's a 79' arctic cat spirit. 59cc (41mm bore x 45 mm stroke). I'm pretty sure it's overheating but I can't figure out why. I've had the shroud and flywheel off- nothings plugged. I think the jetting is right. The thing runs great for a few minutes and my plug is a little tan and a little gray. It has a 35 main jet in it. I am gonna get a bigger one and see if that does anything for me. My kid gets to ride this thing for 5 minutes at a time and for now he's happy but I think he will get sick of this soon.

Check the ignition timing. If its overadvanced, you could overheat (I don't know if it would let you adjust this or not). Also, if the engine has been rebuilt and the piston is too tight in the cylinder, it could be locking up prematurely. On top of that, make sure that you are using enough oil in it - if its anything like a chainsaw motor, 25:1 mix is probably not too far off. Last of all, make sure that there are no air leaks anywhere.

Lazy bastard

I think you are on to something with the timing! Last night I started the damn thing so my son could at least enjoy the couple of minutes that the thing does run. After about 100 yds the thing started to bog down backfired and then ran backwards. Damn Arctic Cats. I used to own them, now I'm remembering why my last 4 sleds were Yammys :o| :o|
