Question for you small engine mechanics.

If it quits and won't start again give it a spray of starting fluid (don't over do it). If it starts on the fluid then it probably is a fuel problem. If it still doesn't start check for spark, If no spark check the coil pulse, coil primary and secondary resistances, all wires/switches and stator.

It is important to remember there are three key things for ANY gas engine to run, Proper Compression, Properly Timed Ignition, and a Proper Air/Fuel Ratio. Try the starting fluid and if it runs on it, find the fuel starvation concern which is what it sounds like to me. Giving it more choke (less air for less fuel being delivered) is pointing to fuel starvation. We know the carb has been gone thru, but you are not getting to the root cause of the problem. look for restricted passages, plugged fuel screen possible built into the bottom of the fuel tank, internaly colapsed fuel hose or even cracked or loose fuel hose sucking air and not fuel. Hope this helps.

It's the pilot jet on the carb. That's what controls the idle circuit. By choking the the engine, you are making it suck fuel of bowl via main jet and choke circuit.
