I'm looking at going with a 159" track this season. What would be a good gearing combo?
My stock 05 RX-1 Mtn is 21/40 w/reverse. I'm thinking 19/40 but just dropped by my dealer and Yammy doesnt list a 19 tooth gear.
Dealer says I cant mix-n-match gears Aftermarket with yammy gears wears out the chain. What are others out there running and buying for gears?
Thanks

I think I'm at 20/40 if I remember correctly. I like it very much.

I thought you were at 20/42 Frosty. Or do you have reverse.
Everyone I talked with said with my reverse kit I can only go with 40 or machine the 42.
So no other options out there guys? I guess I'll try dropping 1 tooth but dont know how much that will really change things.

Some info on your sled
I'm at 19-40 with reverse in an Apex and I believe they are very similar! Talk with Ulmer Racing to go to 19-42 or 19-40, if he is unhelpful talk with Dustin @ Outlaw Motorsports or Troy and Lincoln County Customs they should be able to hook you up with the right stuff! I find it hard to believe no one ran lower gears then 19-40 with reverse.....guys are running 18-42 with the Apex's and the 174" track with great results.....if there is a will there is a way! I run the 19-40 and think it's great...would like to go to Avid drivers to lower this a bit but haven't done it yet. (the Avid cnc'd drivers are a 1/4" smaller in diameter then stock which is like dropping another tooth on the top gear. My sled runs about 86mph on the dream meter with 19-40 , 162x16 maverick track and I'd even consider going to the 42 with Avids. Hope this helps.
cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From very little I know, most moutain people run a 2 to 1 ratio or greater. Assuming you still have stock 8t 2.52 drivers, you end up with 2.14 ratio. Gearing kinda depends on weight of track, if the 159 weights more than then the 151 you might have to regear. MPI sells a R 42, top gears from 18 to 24, but dont warranty the 18 or 19. I my sled I went with 9t, gear it 20/42. I dont really care if the sled can do 100mph, went for bottom end grunt with turbo. Never have issues with belts, ride lots in drainage ditches, trees, stupids places people shouldnt go in the mountains. Also I dont run out of speed on bigger hills. But its up to yo in the long run. I think stock gearing/drivers you have are ok for a 159 also.
