Looking for Feedback on Remote Starters

Keep in mind, you will not be able to use heat shrink tubing unless you CUT the wire/s (which I don't recommend), as the heat shrink has to slide on from a terminated end. I do, however, reccommend soldering all connections and taping the connection real well, then taping over any/all harnesses you splice into or cut open.

P.S. Make sure you are using a "computer-safe" test light (logic probe) and not a standard 12v test light, as if you are poking around, probing wires you are not sure of, you CAN cause damage (short something out, most likely the ECU). I personally recommend using a digital multimeter.P.P.S. Great info on the schematic Flybyu. I too am in the industry, have been for about 14 years.

The book flybyu sent me on the unit I bought comes with a LED tester. I assume that if the wrong wire is poked, even with the LED tester you can short that wire to ground right?
The only part in the manual it said NOT to use the LED tester was finding the tach wire if your going to use that for engine monitoring instead of voltage. (voltage being default)
I have a meter so your saying just use that for finding all the proper wires...and it would I be looking for DC voltage on everything except the tach lead it's saying AC voltage on that? Does the sled pick up the signal off an AC signal on the sleds like a car? I assume a car is picking the signal up off a coil? If I don't use the tach for engine monitoring then how do these know to shut down if the tach goes too high? I assume I want to use the tach monitoring instead of the default "voltage" monitoring???

Thanks,
SD

Tach monitoring (hooking up the tach read wire from Remote Start unit to the appropriate wire on the sled) is much more accurate and reliable (and personally recommended) than voltage sensing (hooking it up "tachless").

You are correct, everything you are looking for will be D.C., except for the tach, which will be A.C..and you will find the tach wire at the coil pack (and probably at the ECU, as well). And the correct tach wire should read about 1v (with meter on AC setting on appropriate voltage scale) and voltage will increase accordingly, as your RPM's go up...and back down to 1v or so, when back to idle (this is rule of thumb for auto's..might be different on the sled?)

And when you say it "comes with an LED tester"..not sure what you mean. Some remote start units come with an LED (built right into module or a seperate plug in LED) and is usually used for setting the tach/voltage-sense feature when you first install the remote starter or have to reprogram it afterwards. Is that what you mean?

PS...The tach/tachless feature is only used in STARTING the sled...RPM's are not monitored once the sled has been started and running. this goes for tachless hookup, as well.

And yes, a computer-safe test light will utilize LED's and prevents backfeeding ground or voltage back into the circuit you are testing versus a standard 12v test light, which just has a standard 12v lightbulb in the tester.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Steve...

Look at the link below. The LED tester it what they give with the "installkit: that comes with this unit. It's just an LED tester.
I still most likely use the meter...

So once the motor is running...how does it know when to kill the motor if the throttle reaches the RPM that kills it? My Tahoe will shut the motor off IF the RPM's hit to high or the brake is applied etc...

Let me know if you get that one, i have the instructions if front of me

I just read the PDF manual on www.boasecurity.com is that what you are talking about or do you have a step by step for an apex/attak?

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the manual you were just looking at. That's what he sent me. He did mention on his diagram that he drew that the colors he listed for the wiring on the sled side of things were for the 07 Apex...so that should help find the wires. If it's pretty straight forward I am going to tackle it. I'll look at the sled once I get the starter. If I feel unclear, Flybyu said he would come by and do it with me. I will be sure to take pictures of the install either way. We (Dundeedude & I) have 2 Apexes to do, so I bought 2 of those starters on Ebay yesterday...
25 bucks with shipping...to have remote start? No brainer...

It appears to be a computer safe type of circuit tester, but I didnt really see any description of the test LED that is included (but I might be missing it though). I would use a DMM to be on the safe side anyhow.

As far as shutting down with elevated RPM's, this may just be an optional feature with some remote starters. As far as security, I would think a brake shutdown circuit is good enough.

DEI makes great products, however, I am not familiar with their BOA line. I was factory trained @ DEI in California a few years back when my company switched over to using their products and I have worked with their products since first getting into the industry (1994'ish) and they were always top notch.

I'm buying one right now too. Please post pics of your install and I will do the same. ;)!

Will do...

Love the Bubbles Avitar BTW...TPB's ROCK!
Season 3 Episode with Alex Lifeson of Rush is a great episode!!!
Love the way Randy kept acusing Alex of smoking some of the stashed dope..yet Alex never does say he didn't...
LMAO!!!!
I need to catch up on some of the new seasons. I really wish it was played down here. I caught one episode on BBC one late night...but have never seen it on US tv since. =(

One of the best parts about living in Canada. TPB's are on every Thursday @ 10. I am a personal fan of the "Green Bastard"....LOL!

snowdog little advise your start wire is negative and you can take the main power by the fuses box on the right side;;for your start you will have to use a relay, since most system do not have negative start and it may not be strong enough to trig the starter relay;;go to an electronic store to find a micro switch that will fit under the park brake lever,,,,i done on mine you will find your tach wire in you owner book;;;and all the others to with the color read it carefully;;;i will try to send picts bye

Thanks attackred06. Flybyu confirmed that yeah it is a negative system (odd) and that we will have to throw a relay in. Should be no biggie. What are you using the micro switch on the park brake lever for? Kill's the engine if park brake is releasedduring remote start mode? Security? I'm not too worried about that.

i use it as a door switch;;;remember it is a car system and a 2 way system so if the park brake is not on upon arming [alarm]it will tell me! so if someone release the brake it will go off!!!! ALSO I NEED THE DOOR SWITCH TO PUT THE SYSTEM IN VALET i did the same with the trunk lid in the seat if it get open the alarm and the remote will sound,,,,that is cool dont you think? it took me many hours of fun work but i would do it again no problem,,,i did a rx-1 5 years ago he came back 2 months ago to switch the system to another machine,,,so more fun to come :yam:
