2015 Yamaha Viper Ltx Dx and wife's 2014 Vector 136"
Last year was on trail with Viper and got low oil light. Long story short found out the oil filter was not on tight enough and was slowly leaking out. This morning on a trip with the wife her Vector had low oil light and figured out oil filter wasn't on tight enough and was leaking last couple days. I work on my own cars but have local powersports guy work on our sleds and jet skis. This summer same thing happened with one of our Yamaha jet skis. Noticed oil in bilge and was because oil filter was not tight enough. What the heck is the deal. I was at a yamaha dealer today and he said some mechanics are afraid to tighten too much and there can be a sweet spot of just right. That too tight can cause a slow leak also. Thoughts?

I just changed my oil and filter (late start on pre-season stuff) and noticed the inner surface of the aluminum access cover was all oily and gritty when I removed it. Found a drip of oil hanging from the filter so must have been leaking / dripping too. The filter appeared tight, couldn't loosen by hand. WTF
Manual says tighten to 19 Nm which is less than spark plug tight. Possible it was too tight and deformed the o-ring?

i never had one leak and always tighten the filter with one hand as tight as i can get it and never seen a sign of a leak. only use yamaha filters on the sleds and always lube the o ring on the filter with new oil. usually the filter crushes when i take it off with the filter strap.

Same here, this was the first time I've had one weep oil. Kind of concerning.

Hand tight using a nitrile glove then a 1/4 turn with wrench.
