I am going riding tomorrow and won't be able to buy any motor oil before I go. The oil is on the bottom line of the stick which is basically how I read it at the add mark. Will it be safe to ride tomorrow or should I try to find some before I head out, which probably won't be yamaha oil.

Make sure you are checking it warm, 10-15 warmup.

Yes I let it warm up until the red light went out saying it was up to operating temperature, but it only took about 3 minutes to reach that temp because it was in my garage, should I let it warm up longer?

Yeah they recommend a 10-15 minute warm up first then check. I'd only add the same oil to mine if needed. I always keep an extra litre around but so far in 1600 km no need to add any. I was told by a mechanic to only add it if the light comes on (so I will carry with me on long runs).

Mine reads low when cold and I've marked it so I know where it should be when cold. Warm it up by idleing or riding your choice for at least 10 minutes. It does make a difference.

also be sure you are NOT screwing the dipstick down....
If you do screw it down however, you will get a HIGH reading, not low.

Idling for 3 minutes is definitely not enough and will typically read low.
To get a accurate and consistent reading you need to:
1. Drive the sled for at least 15 minutes (not just idle it).
2. Park it on flat ground and leave it idling for about a minute (while you pull off the side panel).
3. Shut it down and check the oil level. Remember not to screw the dipstick in, just lower it down until the threads touch the oil tank.
I typically check my sleds right after returning from sledding and add oil right away if it needs it. That way your sled is always ready to ride...

How much oil should be in there? I just finished changing the oil/oil filter a few minutes ago.

I think it's 3.8 litres. 1.5 in the motor and the rest in the resevoir.

According to the manual:
3.0 L (3.2 US qt) for an oil change with filter
2.8 L (3.0 US qt) for just an oil change
3.8 L (4.0 US qt) total volume
The manual also says to only fill the reservoire with 2 L, then run the engine until warm, and then fill it to the H mark (line above the cross hatch).
For some reason in practice we have found an oil change with filter takes more like 3.2 to 3.5 L to bring it to the full mark. 3.0 L brings it in the safe range, but not quite full.

when changing filter and oil, 3.5 lts will bring it to the full mark when warmed up.
