Here is a dump question.
I just picked up my Premium Combination Trunk Bag. Here is the URL to what I have. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/assets/acce ... 00-500.jpg
There are two sets of zippers on the inside that cannot be zipped together. The description discusses modularity of compartments, but I see no way that can happen. If you put something in the section over the rear behind the seat it will drop to either the left or right side. Does anyone else have this bag that can explain how the zippers are to work or didn't I get everything I needed?
Thanks for your help!
Chet

I am interested in getting that bag. I was thinking it was 3 compartments. Do you have a pic of the inside with it opened?

Morning Chet,
The bag really is 3 separate compartments. Each side has a mesh upper and lower part. The zipper connects on each side effectively giving you 2 lower storage compartments (over the exhaust outlet cone) and a center section accessed by the zipper around the clear plastic top. Look real close inside the bag and you will see how it works.
Good luck and enjoy!
Regards, Chuck

Michmobiler,
Yes, I did see the zippers, but zipping them together doesn't seem like the right thing to do. Zipping them together puts a lot stress on the the bag. If I zip them together does it matter when the two zipper sides are two different lengths? I would think the zipper would want to unzip. If you happen to have a picture showing how think works it would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Update: You were correct, the zippers do come together and work. When zipped the bag takes it shape and the zippers match in length. Thanks

I have only seen these bags online. Are they big enough to pack whats needed for day rides and some extras?

new4stroker,
Well, I might not be the best person to answer that question. I just bought the sled and picked up the bag the same day. From what I can tell there appears to be plenty of room. If you are talking about only a one day ride, I think there is plenty of room. I do plan on doing 3-4 night ride this year and I think there will be enough room if I plan it right and pack it correctly. I've heard using zip-loc baggies and getting the air is a big thing.

Be very careful! I had these bags. Twice. First set, the strap tore, bag flopped over the back, then the exhaust burned a big hole in the bag. I'm glad there was nothing flammable in there!
The second set I used one time, on a week long trip. By the second day, the strap had pulled off one corner, and I had to buy some bungee cords to hold it on. By third day, the bottom (fleece) was rubbing through and tearing. By the end of the trip, three of the straps had pulled out of their stitching, and it took several bungees to hold the bags in place. Yamaha covered them under warranty, so it was obviously not something I did wrong... the bags are not made for the intended purpose.
Look closely at the attachment points of the straps to the bags. You'll see that they are sewn in a very small patch on the straps. Pull on it a bit and you can see the pressure the straps put on the stitches. If they were made well, the straps would be going all the way from one to the other, with solid stitching all along the strap. It should be one long strap along each side, or criss-crossing from left front to right rear, and vice versa.
For what they cost, I was impressed with the way they fit and they way they look on the sled. But, pack them up, and I spent most of my trip wondering if my clothes were going to be strewn across the trail at some point during the ride.
Now, I traded to the larger saddle bag set from Yamaha. They have the same design flaw. I'm taking them to a canvas shop to see if he can improve the attachments. If not, I'm taking them back and getting something from a different manufacturer, like Aerostitch.

Thanks for the info!
Do you think additional strapping could be added without doing any damage or change in appearance to the sled? and if so how would you do it?

I plan to try. I think it will work. But you would have to sew inside the bag and I dont have a machine that can do that. So I'm going to try a canvas maker like for boats or a tent repair guy. I'll let you know.

I looked at mine a little closer today. I'm going to have the felt removed from the two back straps, have a continuous strap sewn between the two and have the felt sewn back on. The added strap won't be any longer then what the felt is. For the front straps I plan on having a strap sewn that will be about 9" long to the back side with 3" over sewn on each strap (3" sewn onto the strap and 6" sewn onto the bag). I'm going to have mine done by our old shoe repair guy in town. I wanted a small repair done on my canvas tackle bag by the canvas guy and he wanted like $75 just to change over his machine plus sewing the bag.

I talked to a guy today who does custom tent work. He said he can sew an extra strap across the whole thing, like you describe. He wanted $90 to do it, and said he would guarantee the work for life. Sounds okay, but now I have to decide if I should do it, or if I should find another set. Aerostitch has some nice waterproof bags. They are made for motorcycles, but should work fine. And they seem like really good quality. They go for 150 to 190, so it's almost the same cost. Hmm...

SounderMN,
I looked at some of their bags in their on-line catalog and without having the bag in my hand and placing it on the sled I didn't know how they would fit. I know the Yamaha bag will fit, but I need to improve the strength of the strap mountings.

I ended up getting Cortec sport bags. They are really designed for motorcycles, but the fit it similar enough, and the quality is very high. Overall the quality is higher than the yammy bags, and cost is the same or a bit less. The lower straps on the cortec bags are double stitched internally, a little better than the yammy bags. But, the top straps have a huge connection, and are sewn in a criss-cross pattern with a pair of wide adjustable straps. The trunk bag has a piece that fits under the saddle bag straps, quick disconnects that attach directly to the saddlebags, plus a pair of bungee cords you can use to attach to the sled. This is a much sturdier setup, for sure. Also, the bags are bigger, and are expandable. They come in an electric blue that really looks good on the sled. I hope they hold up as nicely as they look!

SounderMN,
I think I found a link the shows what you described and they do look nice. I almost wished I would have waited to see what you had purchased. I don't have a bike and didn't know anything about the bags that fit them.
Please post a note later on after you have some experience with then to let the rest of us know would your thoughts are.
Thanks
Chester
