Hey, this is fun. Only 1500 more posts & i'll be in ROCKERDAN territory...

steve....awesome work!

can you maybe take a pic of magnet prior to installing it onto the stick too?..id like to check that out.

total kudos to you on this setup!....maybe we can get a sticky for this when you got it all worked out .....sure wont hurt to get those filings out of there periodically!

thanks alot!
Dan

my guess...save weight of the magnet...
seems like they were trying to cut ounces here and there where not needed..

I have a full report, with pics coming soon. Including: a company that's going to make magnetic oil plugs to fit our machines, how to magnetize your drain plug, how to magnetize your dipstick with magnets & possibly how to magnetize your dipstick with a magnaflux machine. I've also dug up some reading material on how chains continually stretch & WEAR throughout their lifespan for those that don't believe this issue is worth the time. I'm actually having some fun, especially knowing guys like ROCKERDAN are smiling with these little "fixits". I'm believing i'm not the only one with OCD...

good job bud....

Ill be heading home soon, and sled will be put away, cause i gotta start working on all my mods on my harley vrod....so,be sure to get this seen next fall....ive been looking over my sled and after 3000 new miles this season(6000+total) ill be replacing my track, and Y pipes and probably alot more.....so next fall it will be pricey!...

thanks again,im glad im not the only one with OCD!

I put a small super magnet on the outside of the chaincase drain plug which makes it magnetic.
The only thing you can't see what its collecting until
it comes time to drain your chaincase.

I made my whole dipstick magnetic for $10. I bought 2 earth magnets from www.kjmagnetics.com with holes in them. I bent the loop, slid them on & re-bent loop. It picks up 1/4-20 nuts on whole shaft. I'm not sure if 1 will work because they're stuck together & i cut myself trying to get them apart. PART# RX054-N52 for $5.25 each. Actually i think RX04X0DIA for $14.95 would work better. I haven't figured out how to post pictures yet, but i'll try if someone walks me through it...

actually the two magnets will work better due to the fact they are axially magnetized vs diametrically magnetized...

axially will create pull from the area we wish to pull from where diametrically would be side to side..

You're correct sj. The axial magnets worked best. I also found some small magnets that fit on the drain plug & the oil reservoir plug. I didn't glue them & after 500 miles they're still there. I'm glad you reminded me because i almost forgot about the whole thing. I still need to buy a digital camera to post all pics...

might not want a force pulling at the drain and opposing at the dipstick as well....

from the looks of the force of the dipstick...I'd bet it to be significantly stronger than an oem magnetized dipstick

does anyone know why Yamaha didn't make it magnetic in the first place, they must have some reason

I know that there were several incidences of the magnets falling off of the old dipstick style and trashing the bearings, gears, chain. That could definately be why the new ones dont have magnets. But I really don't know why they couldn't have just designed a better way to hold the magnets on the sticks.

can you double check the specific part no..the ones I received seem too big in the I.d. and only a side of the inside to the magnet touches the stick..

See my idea posted Mar 17
I just changed my chaincase oil the other day after 1500 miles with the magnet on the outside of the drain plug and it did have some metal filings stuck to the drain plug.

The magnet is super strong,it will pick up a wrench and it is about the size of a watch battery. No glue is required.
