Maybe dumb ?
But how much of the metal shavings in a high tech motor like the Yamaha's are ferrous (magnetic), maybe they left this out as it is no longer as big an issue?

yes true to a degree...but based on that logic...why use an oil filter for your engine...miniscule metal shavings...I'd rather have them out..
they left the mag out...like many other things they did...to save weight...and in some cases money..

Are we talking about the motor, or the chaincase? I would think there might be quite a difference in the types of "stuff" floating around in the lube when comparing one vs. the other? Not sure of the advantage of the magnet on the motor, but the advantage of having one in the chaincase sounds pretty good.

Chaincase...the dipstick used to have a magnet at the tip....yamaha stopped this in 06? and i believe for a cheap mod why not....

sj - I was thinking more of yamadoo's question. I agree with his thinking regarding how effective a magnet might be on our motors, but that's not what we were talking about doing? The discussion was regarding magnets placed on/within the chain case?

ah right...well this is what your oil filter is for...and if one is still concerned about metal particulate....a higher quality filter like the one I use is recommended...I use the pure one..
also...they make filter magnets if you wish to gain a magnetic force for ones motor.

Why even think about a magnetic dip stick when the motors in a yamaha go for ever without one. Crap I get tired of looking at my sled and get a newer one long before the engine starts to wear and not having a magnet in the oil to pick up anything that the filter misses.I don't think that a magnet will benefit anything but your own piece of mind (OCD maybe ) that the little particles of metal are caught on the magnet . Lol

Its for the chain case not the engine! I like the idea but I like the idea of getting rid of the chain case and going with belt drive better.

As Sled Dog said, but as i see it belt drive is another few 2-3000$, and as im reloacting my skid and therefore change all beraings in the chaincase to 2rs and poke a small hole to keep the metal flings out. And the magnets sounded like a sweet idea.
