Hey guys new to this forum lookin for a little help....I have a 2000 600 griz that Ive been restoring for the last couple of months....Im up to the $2800 mark and still not riding...I did a complete overhaul including crank and have gottin it running great....the problem is I keep stripping the splines out of the fixed primary clucth sheeve.....when I put the thing back together originally it all looked good...rode it about 5 miles and it made a terrible noise in the clutch ...tore it down again replaced the belt and replaced the the clutch sheeve and the bearing in the outside cover and put a clutch kit in it and started over.... It tore the splines out again...... and thats where I am today....rideless....Has anyone had this problem before????..Im sure it something Im doin or not but pretty stumped with this one.....any help would be a really good thing at this point.....Thanks from clueless......lol

WOW, I have never heard that before. Are you sure that you are putting it back togather correctly...

Yep just like it came apart.....I am completely lost.....at what to do.... I know I made some horsepower when I built the engine Im just wonderin if I made to much....that with the 26 extreme mud hooks...maybe too much..... cause it hookin up strong for a few miles.. till it gernades....
I am at a disadvantage tho....never rode a stock griz so dont know what to expect,,,,,

HMM...thats strange, I drove my bros grizz with a bog bore and that thing will pull wheelys with 27" tires with very little effort and it holding strong in the clutch area.

I have seen this several times and the problem is always the same.

The washer ends up getting sandwiched slightly sideways between the nut and the cam plate.

When that happens, the splines will get stripped every time.

Before you start the nut on the shaft, make sure that the washer is completely centered over the slines and that the end of the splines are just at the outer edge of the washer. As you start the nut, be very carefull to keep pressure against the washer, and keep your eye on those splines. The washer is notorious for slipping just enough to allow the splines to get cock-eyed.

:D

Thanks for the info grizhopper.......but let me get this straight......your sayin that washer way out on the end of the shaft is causing the inside sheeve to strip out......the one next to the crank case....It just seems like if that was the case it would be the outer moving sheeve that would strip instead of the inside like mine......Im gona tear her down again and look....but god I do hope your right....thanks again....

I missed where you specified that the Inner half of the primary was the part you were referencing...

Still, the washer in question, is responsible for holding all the primary parts inward. So, yes, it can cause the inner half a great deal of greif also.

Make sure the splines on the outer hubcap looking thing are intact.

You will understand once your inside it, now that you know what too look for.

Good luck with it.

Hey guys just got around to tearin this thing down this mornin and taking another look for the 3rd time....lol....everything looked like it was put together right.....even torqed right acording to my snapon torq wrench.....I checked.....lol...I think Im just goint to go ahead and buy a complete new front primary clutch and start again......thats all I know to do..... the splines in the cam of the front part of the clutch are in good shape still tight and the washer looked postioned right on the shaft....but who knows....I havent short cutted on this rebuild so far so I might as well suck it up and eliminate the fact that somthing else in clutch might not be right....altho Im baffelled as to why....which leads me to this.....does anyone know where to get the best prices on parts for these beasts.......thanks again from clueless

Well guys I got my new clutch in 10 days ago and got it installed......Ive been riding for a week around the house now and no trouble so I put it to the test yesterday......I took it to the ozark mountians and rode for 20 miles.....the last six was pullin my buddys suzuki 500 back to the trailor.....lol....up hill....needless to say I think I got it fixed.....the only thing I could figure was that the primary clutch was warped a little after takin it off and checkin it out......dont know how r why but it was......anyway thanks for the great info.....and really impressed with the hp I created......great bike as long as she'll hold together........thanks again not as clueless as I thought....lol....
