MAJOR GRINDING WHEN I BRAKED FOR CORNER

hit my brakes for a turn and a serious grinding noise happened and i did not slow down very fast. hit the gas to miss a tree and grinding with serious vibration. felt like the sprocket were stripped but they look fine. must be the gears any one had this happen, definatly something is broken. any suggestions? thank you. sled is 07 attack

I'm guessing that you cracked open the chaincase then? What was the chain tension like?

jack shaft bearing on clutch side same thing happened to me

grimm: checked for fluid at chain case but no sign of any.

aezerskis: when your jack shaft bearing went out could you still drive cause mine wont move or barely moves and the grinding is way loud.

kviper: noise still there, when clutch engages. sound like gears are strippped.

Could it be in the gear reduction gear box?

I would suggest that you start looking here if there is no oil in the chaincase....

checked for oil around chain case as in a leak. did not say there was no oil in chaincase. i have warranty until 2011 so im not going to mess with it. i will post what dealer finds. thanks

you said the sprockets looked fine. in order to see them you need to pull off the chain case cover.
If you did this you would know if you have oil in the chain case or not.

did you check to see that your chain tensioner is properly adjusted?

If your sled will not slow down when you apply the brakes i am assuming the noise you are hearing is the chain skipping over the gears.

I am wondering where your chain case oil is

To clarify this for him, I believe that what he meant was that he LOOKED FOR LEAKS and found none, and that the OIL LEVEL WAS FINE.

By "sprockets", you are referring to the DRIVERS (the notched plastic wheels that pull the track), correct? Those typically don't STRIP, but they can definitely ratchet, even if there is NOTHING BROKEN.

I also judge by your post that you did NOT open the chaincase and inspect the gears -- anyone who could do that would definitely be able to determine the existence of any problem by visual inspection (no offense).

I would conclude though, by the fact that it won't drive any more, that there was a problem with the chain tension. Probably broke the post off the back side of the chaincase and released the tensioner wheel. There is a lot of stress on this part when you squeeze the brakes hard, particularly if the chain was improperly tensioned and if you go to brakes hard from being on the throttle -- this will cause the chain to SNAP against the tensioner. It is also possible that you broke the chain. Also possible (though unlikely) is that you jumped part way into reverse.
