Still looking for a RX1. There are a few for under $4200 and some closer to $3k.
There is a company that makes a 4 stroke swap kit for the RT chassis Mach Z, but it uses the Doo 12004tec. Would have to source a 1200 4tec engine & obviously make my knuckles bleed for the swap, all that work for a 1200cc 4 stroke that can be handled by 600's..meh..
But I WILL be keeping my Mach Z. It's not going anywhere but riding. I want an RX1 for a back-up, but also as a toy to tinker with and be my primary sled should my Mach Z have a failure. My main concern is that I've been spoiled by the handling & ability to handle whooped trails on my Mach Z & getting on the RX1 and cringing when the trails get tough.
I started on a 97 Mach 1 and whenever the trails got rough I slowed down and prepared for my spine to get jammed into my skull. On the 05 Mach Z, I see the whoops, grin & grab the throttle.
I wish I could get a test ride on one....

I would search hard for a cheap 06 Apex or Attack. I would only go 05 for an RX1.

Its wierd this is the first time that I have ever heard the Mach is the best handling sled they have had. They are heavier then a yammie, the suspension is nothing special and less aggressive stance (rider forward) then a rev.
While not owning a mach but driving one a few different times I dont get how your so partial to them, but if you love it so much buy another motor and when yours pops swap it out in a day and keep going. Cheaper then buying a back up RX1 that will suck to ride as a back up because you didn't want to put anytime or money into the suspension to make it better.
Your not going to get a yammie for the money you want to spend that will make you happy. Your budget will barely allow you to get into a RX1 and from there I say you need at least another $2k unless the RX1 is already modded with the right stuff. The stock rear suspension will be horrible compared to your Mach if you get a 03-04 RX1 so plan on at least $1000 to replace that with something that is better. Apex seat, bar risor, well set up skis, should get you close.

I got my 05 RX1 last year for 3100 bucks with 3000 miles on it. The sled was in perfect shape too. I just kept an eye on craigslist for 3 months and it popped up. Bought it within 3 hours of the posting.
Kinger, buying a complete 05-07 1000sdi motor that is new will cost as much as buying a RX1. And with all that money, it's another 2 stroke with the same reliability questions. To properly rebuild or replace a 1000sdi is expensive, much more so than your average 2 stroke.
545 is the curb weight for the RX1, 529 is the dry curb weight for the Mach Z. I believe the APEX is even heavier than the RX1.
I don't sit when I ride, rider forward position means nothing to me. The RT chassis is based off the REV, it has some bulkhead reinforcing, slightly wider and that is about it. The seats are softer & lower, a REV seat bolts right in without modification.
I am not opposed to buying an RX-1 and upgrading the suspension. The Yamaha's have such a bad rep from what I hear as far as handling, so that is why I am here to learn what can be done to improve them. If I can eliminate bone-jarring hits working with the rear suspension & the front shocks, I will find a way to get it to handle in the corners.
Actionjack, why do you say 05+ for RX1?

Actually they kept cutting weight, the apex's are lighter then the RX1s. 05 is the best year RX1, you get the mono suspension which is soft but comfy, it will require a revalve and be a good riding sled. Front shocks are fine no need to swap on a back up sled. Main thing with the RX1 is you need a apex firm seat from a RTX or MTX and taller pivot risor, extended cables, 13mm sway bar, and revalved monoshock and correct weight spring for your weight.
03-04 sleds used the proaction rear suspension which weighs over 70 lbs and not even that durable but ride was below average at best. I wouldn't mess with that one just swap it out day 1. Get a performance suspension like a ZX2 or Expertx and I'm willing to bet you forget about your mach.
Also on the RX's the carbs are a PITA but if you dont mind spending a couple hours each season cleaning them and synching them everyonce in awhile they really are quite responsive. RX1's were only 140-145hp, apex were all 150+hp. Apex is fuel injected and virtually no motor maint even for storage.
wet weight on 03 RX1 were over 720lbs, apexs were down to around 680ish. Machs were around 690-700. The dry weight is marketing. I'm not a expert on the mach just rode with one where my buddy loved it and we got a chance to weigh them swap rides, etc. He bought it brand new in 05, and 07 it blew it up with 2800 miles on it just taking a slow corner at 30 mph. He doesn't know what a wrench looks like and had the dealer do everything, if it blew there is a defect in the motor.
Good luck!
