Guys, this is a question that I was PM'd from a forum member regarding his sled. I'm posting it here with my response to get input from the collective wisdom of the group. Tom asked the TY tech advisors to try and do this as much as possible to help build the knowledge base of the board. I receive/answer quite a few PM's every week (and I'll still answer them like I alway have) but you'll probably see more of them posted to the forum as well. I realize that for whatever reasons, some guys prefer to ask their questions privately. If I post your PM, I will edit it to remove User ID, location, etc (as I have with this one).
So, that said - any other thoughts for this member?
Currently running a MCX turbo on a Nytro RTX. 4000km. After summer storage it smells like it is burning oil. I should say the oil has not been read low after 300km this year. It did not burn oil or smell like burning oil last spring. On one occasion it produced a plume of smoke last year after a ride, cooldown, and startup in -25c weather. This only occured once and disappeared. So far this year both rides have been in -20 or colder. Exhaust smoke and odour is significant. Any advice would be appreciated. Maybe you will get to do an engine job out of this lol.
The first thing to check is your oil pump return line. You're going to have to pop the seat off, then the shielding. Make sure there is no kink in the lines, and that they haven't collapsed down on themselves. Lots of heat back there, and I've seen oil lines in pretty rough shape when I'm tearing sleds down. Also check clamps for tighness. If all looks good in the back, check the fittings up front next. The pump won't work if there is air leaking into the return line (think of a drinking straw with a hole in it). Last thing to look at would be the face of the pump itself. There are 4 x #25 Torx screws that hold the face of the pump on. If those come a little bit loose the pump won't work either.
If the pump is not scavenging the oil from the turbo properly it (the oil) gets backed up and pushed past the seals into your intake/exhaust sides of the turbo. It will smoke quite a bit.
Check this out first and if all looks well we'll move on to some other stuff to inspect.

Did it ever overheat? Sounds like rings and warped cylinders if your oil pump lines are ok.
Just my thoughts.

Have seen a few Coke(burnt oil) the oil outlet on the turbo due to the turbo not being cooled down before turning the sled off.

My thoughts exactly. I'd put money on the drive pin.

Problem resolved. I found a kink in the hose from the MCX oil breather to the engine oil reservoir. Blockage and possible ice buildup caused a restriction in the turbo oil return line. Kink removed by shortening the hose. The excessive exhaust smoke / odour is eliminated.
