Moving up to an Apex

Hello folks,

I am planing on moving up to an Apex this season. I am either going to buy a 2012 leftover or a new 2013. I've been riding an 03 RX1 which has been updated and has served me very well. I have been happy with the sled, this year I am planning on a few long saddlebag trips in Quebec so I want an updated sled.

A few questions:
1. what are your experiencing for gas mileage on the Apex?
2. what updates would you suggest: front sway bar? larger idler wheels to minimize hyfax wear?, etc.
3. has anyone experienced oil consumption problems on an Apex? My 03 RX1 strated using a lot of oil the last season I rode it, 2011.

I can coment on an 2011 apex xtx. Larger wheels where needed, but I think the standard apex is not as bad. Fuel milage is 10-13 mpg and you should run premium. Otherwise, run it and enjoy. Oh ya, maybe a ski upgrade depending on what year you do get.

My Apex SE has always done atleast 14mpg with a best of just over 17mpg. They all need either dually carbides, snotrackers or tuner skis to stop darting. I have Woodys duelies and very satisfied with them. The 128" tracks are fine with Hyfax wear but the XTX seems to need larger wheels or Yamahas new hyfax or both to deal with wear.
No oil consumption issues in a few thousand miles for me.

I have a 2011 Apex XTX, and I get 14 mpg or better.
I run Woody's Slim Jims, no complaints. Pioneer wheel kit, and the new Dupont HyFax.
 
DUPONT slides will eliminate need for larger wheels. Do not run premium; it's a PROVEN waste of money in Apex. Alternate ski's a must, either after-market or dual Yammi's; which ones will depend on you & how you ride [research that on this sight]. Oil consumption should be near 0. If older Apex maybe shock upgrades. Then ride...
 
The rx1s had oil ring tension problems. They fixed this issue. No oil burning in an apex. Apex over rx1 has, better front and rear suspension, higher seat, more rider forward, fuel injection, better fuel mileage. I get between 14-16 mpg with mine. But I've also noticed it really drinks fuel if your on the throttle for extended periods of time. Like lake riding or miles of open fire road trails.
 
I have a 2011 apex xtx and really enjoy riding this sled. my mileage is usually 16 mpg or a touch better and full tank runs I usually get 130 miles per tank with a gallon to spare. I have 3000 miles on this sled now and has had zero problems except for hyfax wear is a problem on the xtx. I ride with many nytro xtx's and they don't have the hyfax problem like mine. We couldn't get the new dupont sliders here last year so I put on ski doo 135mm wheels and that was a waist of money as the first one blew the rubber off in 120 miles, the next one broke in half with 400 miles on it and the next one totally came off the bearing shorty after that, so my yammie wheels went back on. I can't say I have a darting issue with it, but we don,t have much for trails where I mostly ride.
Oil ussuage is zero; still has original belt on it.
Performance wise I ride with a half dozen older model apex's and my 2011 xtx is way faster out of the hole, faster mid range and faster on top end and we are all stock sleds, so the hype looks true about the 2011 and newer apex's being faster over the older models.
I have the tank saddle bags and they hold alot of stuff so I don't have a problem with storage.
Turn the key and ride.
 
2012 Apex XTX with the PCV and Ram Air Lid and I was getting at least 14.5 mpg and with spirited riding. Also was running 228 1.34" roetin studs. I would recommend the X wheels, as I burned through the orig. hyfax in less than 200 miles. After the wheel package, minimal wear in the next 500 miles plus in lousy conditions in Upstate NY. 7.5" shaper bars on the skis helped tremendously over the factory 2.75" carbides. Just my $.02.
 
Yes, a newbie and not as true blue as some others....as I usually take from this site without giving but I'll try to be more involved moving forward if I find anything that hasn't already been posted to death.

I saw (2) unsold 2012 XTX's last week at dealer that will save $ 1500 - $ 2000 from the 2013 price.
The only difference from 2012 to 2013 is changing the color blue to the white/red....which is sharp looking but hardly worth $2k savings if you can make the right deal on a 2012.

The 2012 XTX is slightly different than the 2011's but only in wheel position to (barely) address the Hyfax issue and a small change in the position of ski mount for what is still a lousy ski without snowtrackers or other suitable runners.
 
Thanks folks for the input. During the previous few seasons I have been riding my 03 RX1 and my son has been riding an 00 SRX. We experienced a detonation problem on the SRX engine during a trip last season. I've rebuilt the SRX but will not use it again for long distance saddlebag trips due to the declining quality of gas and the difficulty in finding 91 or 93 octane is some areas. My plan is to buy an Apex and pass the 03 RX1 to my son. I have found a few 2011 and 2012 leftovers but will continue to look for the best deal. I am willing to drive up to 300 miles one way for the right deal. I'd appreciate it if you can PM me if you know of any dealers in NY, CT, VT, NH, or southern Maine with any leftover Apex sleds. Thanks!!

It's across state but contact bob weaver motorsports in north tonawanda ny. 716-693-1500. They have new as well as left over and used.
