I have an Odyssey 545 for my S/C; less than 2 years old it would either be low enough to not start and die or only crank 1/2 times and be dead. Yami dealer deep cycle charged it twice (about 1 week each time); took it in for warranty after that to Batteris Plus and when they put load/tested it, said it was good - so no new battery. About 2 months ago I went to start it and it barely kicked over & did start. Tried this weekend and now it's dead.
EDIT #2: I've ordered the Optimate III.
Q: how do you test your system to determine if there is a drain?

Hi, maybe someone else would chime in on this but from my understanding on certain batteries is that if you keep running the battery dead, they keep getting weaker and eventually won't hold a charge. I have my sled plugged in to an Optimate battery charger most of the time during the off season.
The oddesy is one heck of a battery and if they checked and it was ok then you have other problems. There is a drain on the sytem which will draw any battery down to nothing. Find the drain and save the cost of a new battery only to find it is no better.

Yakusa is right,
If you let a battery go dead or even low it will sulfate. Let it go dead twice it's over. You must keep the battery charged in the off season or it will die after a year or two.

There are chargers now that desulphate batteries. I have never charged mine over the summer and they both have the original battery in them. The quad has had the same battery since new and it is a 98 never charged in the off season. Ran them all on the optimate III to desulphate and charge and they are all fine.

Colorado Yamaha - How long did your dealer let your battry charge before putting it back into service?
Agree with Sled Dog - I never charge my batteries in the off season either, not on the RX'es nor on my bikes. I put my batteries on the Optimate III charger a few weeks before season starts. I let the Optimate charge my batteries for at least a week or more before I put my toys into use. Works for me, never had a battery problem after buying the Optimate charger.

I just purchased the replacement Oddysey for the S/C after 3 year's, it's the PC545MJ the MJ is for metal jacket that is built into the outer shell to protect from heat and vibration. the standard 545 is good to 40degree C
and the metal jacket one is good to 80 degree C. I just bought the battery for $110.00 plus michigan tax, it came to $116.00 I let the old battery run down this summer and it just does not have enough power now to turn over the sled. I do not want to take any chance's this winter.

Colorado Yamaha said:EDIT: thanks for the info guys - I've ordered the Optimate III; half the price of a new battery.
I would still check your sleds electrical. If that was me I would buy a new battery for peace of mind. The cold really takes a toll on batteries and I wouldn't want to be stranded in the mountains.
