Mpi trail turbo problem solved.

I have the sleeper install, hitting 8850 max rpm, 116-117mph on hard pack with (over drive clutch & stock gearing)

I've been battling getting over 8250 at wot with my sled.

I adjusted the Ulmer clutch kit weights. I removed weight from the tips with no change. The sled still pulled nice mid range but fell off at 95 mph and only 8250 at the most.

Then called Allen Ulmer. He mentioned the intake location. I have it under the hood on top of the clutch guard ( installed by the dealer).
Allen said I should try to put the intake in open air. I kinda said ok... I'll try it.
So i got home and removed the side panel and ajusted the intake a bit.

Well sir!!! Instant rev limiter 9050 all the time. This machine was a hole new monster!!

Needless to say I had to ajust the weights back to Ulmer specs. I only have a small test area but it seemed to stay at 8800. Happy fella!

So I Geusse the sleeper look is no good.

First and second pic are of the filter mounted by the dealer, the foam is in the side panel. You can tell it was pushed against the filter. Third pic is how I tested it. The fourth is what mpi recommends for through hood mount( no more sleeper)
Looks like I will have to mount the filter through the hood.

Don't worry about the sleeper look, everyone knows you have a turbo anyways! haha. I can tell you my seat dyno feels the difference when your intake is outside pulling in cold air.

Doesn't ulmer have an updated intake he makes that keeps it under hood but moves it up front below the radiator? I don't like where its mounted under hood but dont want it sticking threw my hood either. Might be a good mix inbetween?

Seat dyno haha i get it

inrbugness was right, take off the diverter for clutch air and the underhood intake will work great.

What the big deal with the "sleeper look"? Personally if I had a turbo I'd show it. ... I think it would be a good conversation piece! Lol if you had it under the hood would a vent kit work??

In my case the girlfriend was adamant that it not stick out of the hood. So, I removed the clutch cool air diverter and that lets cool air run straight to the filter. I am sure being outside is still better but that is not going to happen.

Amine was only pulling 8200 on the weekend....have to try that diverter trick

Did you notice intake temp difference? I was getting ready to stick mine out hood but I think I'll try this first

There are a couple ways to mount through the hood. I removed the grill in the side pannel. John @mpi said he liked to go straight through the hood. The first two pics are my sled and the last is one John sent me. I like both. Hard decision.

Did you remove the foam cartridge from the filter?
I ran with the side cowling off and only saw 100-200 rpm more? I did take the clutch air diverter off and it seemed to work as good. Just not ready to put it threw yet.
Did you end up going back to 3-0-3 on your weights Joe?

I'm actually at 3-0-4. 4 being the tip. But I am &110 @8700. So I will remove one off the tip.

If you run out the side vent and then straight up the air intake is hardly noticeable from the front.
