I bought my first Phazer in 2007...needless to say oil filter changes were a pain in the #*$&@. Last year I bought a 2008 MTX. Changed oil filter today by removing the left tie rod boot and drilling out one rivit on the plastic the boot mounts to. Managed to get a strap wrench on the filter through that gap and change it in a few min. Replaced the rivit with a Nytro style plastic push pin fastener.....done.. You are welcome

I use the longer 5GH filters and feed it up through the bottom, although I have the airbox off also.
I'll have to try your way also.

It has been a few years since I changed mine, and when I changed it I had to fix the starter as well, so I had the whole front end off. I was thinking that pulling the airbox was all that was required to get tot he oil filter. Is my memory that poor?

If you go through the top, it requires the removal of : seat, all plastic besides lowers, tank cover, head light and air box with all of its plumbing. Even then acess to the filter is poor at best.It has been a few years since I changed mine, and when I changed it I had to fix the starter as well, so I had the whole front end off. I actually just did this tonight, removed the headlight, and the upper side covers, then pulled the airbox. That was it. I will say what has been a struggle is the Schmidt Bros sloppy steering kit. Last kit I did was on my 07, and I had the whole front end apart while I had to get access to the starter.

I took some pictures today:
This looks like a great way for accessing the filter. In the last picture you can see the filter just behind the cover. The pictures are taken from the left side of the drivers position. I had some drops of oil under the bellycover. And it was wet around the filter, so I guess its not tightened enough.

Would a filter wrench like this work? I don't recall if there is clearance at some point around the filter to fit.

If you go to my post on the venture MP forum, I have pictures of doing this type of oil change. First time I ever did the filter, and this way was easy. I just figured there had to be a better way.

The starter can be removed by grinding off that useless tab on the bottom of the engine.I actually just did this tonight, removed the headlight, and the upper side covers, then pulled the airbox. That was it. I will say what has been a struggle is the Schmidt Bros sloppy steering kit. Last kit I did was on my 07, and I had the whole front end apart while I had to get access to the starter.
