When using a multimeter to test voltage, do you prick the wire with both the red and black posts? Never used one and could use some advice. Also, what position do you place the dial? mVDC or just DC? I'm checking something for 8 to 12 volts (unrelated to snowmobile).
Any help is appreciated.

Yes you go to the red and black or a better ground like the alternator. Just DC on the setting.

Try not to Prick the wire. It will compromise the insulation and could induce corrosion or cause a Short. Trace the wire back to a junction point (fuse box, accessory). impalapower is correct just DC.
Always use a setting that is higher than what you are testing also. If you are checking 12 volt dc then use a 24 to 50 volt setting. This prevents you from having the needle whack itself on the far side of the scale. Another reason it helps to prevent the unit to fail due to too low a setting for what is being tested burning a circuit and wrecking the unit.
