I have to buy a washer and dryer but I should have money left over and I want the Curve XS skis but...

today at work there was a surprise layoff of 50 workers and everyone accost the board is getting a cut in pay by 5% Other than the pay my boss told me that I'm okay but a few other coworkers were let go and had their hours cut back also. IT makes me nervous b/c if the economy doesn't change I can be at risk of losing my job so I'm thinking of saving the extra $420 and not buy the skis. Sucks though b/c I need to improve the steering of my '07 RS Nytro.

If I replace my carbides that should make a difference right or am I better off just riding this out and eventually buying the Curve skis or whatever is best for my needs at the time? I'm assuming any carbide would be better than the ones that came on my stock ski. There's so many different carbides and mixed reviews so I don't know what to even consider.

The last few days I made some suspension adjustments. I weigh about 170 with gear. I have my fox floats at 55 psi, lowered my center rear spring, compression all the way soft, rear on medium setting and took all transfer off. The sled seams to sit lower to the ground and not sure if this is due to lowering the center rear spring? it seams as though steering effort is a little lighter and I can whip the rear of the sled around turns more.

I want light steering without the darting and pushing. Also should I get 6 inch carbides? I've never bought any before and this is my first sled. I'm assuming the 6 inch will make turning a little harder but give me better control up front. Where I live it's mostly all groomed trails and we seldom go off trail.

I know some may think this is a stupid post and I have read so many reviews and I'm kind of lost to what direction to go and I don't have a lot of money to guess and buy something I definitely wont like.

no time to be spending on anything you don't really need. normally I am the last person to say this.

if your carbides are worn out, upgrade to an economical 6" set and do the ski shim mod in the tec section. it will handle a whole lot better and it will cost you next to nothing. this is what i had done to mine untill i put the curves on this season. my stockers had no keel left at all. i could have made them work for 1 more season but now they stay in the trailer for a good set of spares.

I hear you job security! I would shim the skis, get 6-inch carbides and leave it. Get new skis next winter.

I recently put on new skis and carbides and I visually compared them with the original carbides; the originals look like a joke on the VL - I don't even think they were 4". No wonder I had to fight to steer. Last year I also shimmed my ski rubbers and that helped somewhat with the darting; you might also consider a ski saver like the Bergstrom ones or fashion a homemade set.

All the best with your job,

I would only do what you can on the cheap.

But this is coming from a guy that got laid off on Thursday....

8 out of a 50 person business gone. And there really wasn't a reason for me to be let go because I exceeded every performance goal they had. I know a lot of the guys I work with are pretty mad at the boss for letting me go.

Eh, I as underpaid anyways... I will end up better off in the end, but until I get a new job, it's thrifty thrifty for me....

Now for you folks that have a lot of $$ to spend, do it. Our economy needs it.

On a sled with 120 hp, you really should have 6" carbides IME.

Thanks for all the responses. I ended up getting more tax money back than I thought. My work stopped paying overtime so when my shift is over I'm out the door and b/c of that I made less money this year but was taxed more on everything else so I got more tax return back. I bought the Curve skis with 6 inch shapers. I've been debating what to do and I should save but no matter what I do I'll be penny pinching anyway. Living off soups, tuna fish, pbj, water and noodles with butter haha. I'm not planning to ever get rid of my sled, and skis were the only big purchase I had to make sooner or later.
