My new 04' RX-1 ER...question

Hello,
New around here. Great site!
I purchased a leftover 04' RX-1ER last week. I am impressed with the great fit and finish of this sled, along with the power and ride quality. I also own a 96 ZRT800, quite a difference between the two!
I rode for about 40km yesterday, and at about 3500-5000 rpms while holding a steady trottle position, it appears to be popping/sputtering/backfiring so I am suspecting a fouled plug(s). It sounds ok at idle and when I get on the trottle. However, I have not been revving about 6000rpm as per the breakin procedure.
Any clue to why this is happening to a new sled with such low mileage?
Also, when the engine was warm, it was difficult to start again... it cranked longer than usual. Is this normal?

I have experienced a pinched fuel line on mine once. I took it in for a tune-up and when I got it back it would sputter and pop if I got on it too quick. The fuel screws (I'm sure I'll be corrected on this) were also out of adjustment when I got it back too.

No. It should start right up. Every machine is a little different. Sometimes you have to squeeze the throttle a little when cranking, but not always. My 03 and 05 RX-1's behave a little differently, but they always start when warm.

Redsled, Had the same problem with mine and kept thinking it was a turbo related problem. Found the slide in #1 carb to be sticking.

I will replace the plugs and see what happens.
If it acts up again, I will take it to the dealer to get the carbs checked. I'm hoping this is something simple, since this is the whole reason I went with a 4-stroke...for dependability!

Most sleds and bikes with the motorcycle style engine like to be started a certain way. I hit the throttle when its warmed up with my elbow just a tiny bit when I crank mine over and it seems to like this. Others it seems you dont have to give any throttle too. Same with bikes I have noticed.

Sounds like you have the same problems i HAD...ending up being a pinhole in a diapram in one of the fuel pumps...had to replace them...let me know how you make out

I have to apply a little throttle when starting once it's heated. Not an issue, always starts, just needs a little gas.

Chean the carbs, sounds like one's plugged.

DO NOT do that to break the motor in. The manual does NOT SAY NOT to exceed 6000 rpm, it says to avoid PROLONGED OPERATION above 6000 rpm. It is absolutely necessary to continuously vary the throttle position WIDELY and it IS NECESSARY to exceed 6000 rpm.

I did give it a few bursts above 6000, but no prolonged operation.
I'm not sure if it could be dirty carbs with only ~40km on the sled??? I could be wrong though.

It doesn't matter how many miles. If it was sitting with gas in it at the dealers it could be gummed up.

Mine is an 05 and had 0 miles when it started to pop. I never drove the sled without the turbo, thats why I was thinking turbo related.

I put new plugs in it. Let it warm up good (only left the choke on long enough to get it running on its own).
Still running like crap when I took it for a run. Must be something to do with the carbs. I will have to take it to the dealer.

Well, got the sled back from the dealer today.
A piece of clear hose that is some sort of venting hose for the carbs somehow got into the clutch area, and was worn/burnt and this created the hose to melt a little and close. The service guy said it was only running on two carbs properly. A new piece of hose, and it is running fine.
Just thought I would give an update.
