OK here is the question...Your thinking of selling your Yamaha.....What sled out there now? Not new, 2006 and up would you buy. Any brand, any size engine. Looking for comfort, sportiness, on and off trail capabilities..121 or 136 to 144 length.........

900 Ace.
Love the idea of a variable tune Viper. Kids sled, wife's sled, my sled.

I'm with Actionjack ... ACE 900 Renegade 137 with Rmotion and LinQ accessories. The only thing I'm not completely sold on with this sled is the ergos and maybe the power limitations. If Ergos and power were the biggest priorities, and money was no object, I would lean toward a Viper or Cat XF7000 with a turbo kit. But then I'd be giving up the ability to make this a one-size-fits-all family sled.
Since you specify that the sled cannot be a new model, in that case I don't think I would dump my current sled for anything else. The justification for me has to be that the alternative is a better option than my current ride.

Ski-Doo Freeride 146" or Ski-doo Renegade Backcountry 800 hands down, with the Freeride being more extreme off trail. I hate the idea of an engine good for 5k miles (or less!!), but they really kick-a$$ off trail. Freerides are harder to find used, but the Backcountry's are fairly easy to find. JMO.
I'm holding out another year to see what Yamaha and Cat bring to the table for 2015 since this is what I'm looking for also.
Another possibility is a 2012 or 2013 Cat High Country 800.

121 not so great off trail - especially on the Avalon - so 136 to 144 is better. Single or 2 up? 2 or 4 stroke preference?
Have 5 phazers and we really like them - never changed belts or plugs with 8500 km on one sled and 6500 on another - but no 2 up option other than a Venture lite version. Prices on used phazers are decent. Can't knock Yamaha motors but we just picked up a pair of Pro Rmk's to replace a pair of Nytros - wanted something lighter and a bit less of a handful for playing in the trees on the west coast.
If you don't need big power / speed then for a family sled the ACE 600 seems to be a decent ride and there area few used ones around locally with a few of the auto / rec dealers bring in ex rental fleet units. Used market here is a bit more limited and pricy than other areas and shipping costs tend to eat any savings on buying out of province.

Couch, We do a yearly run out west every year (Buchans) and I am looking for another sled. No groomed trail riding here on the Avalon. So it is ditch banging, rough trail, and some hill climbing. Thought about the Cat F (duck) chassis as well as the iq in a 600...Doo engine reliability worry me

Re: apex
The iq should worry you as well, the guy that just bought my Fx Nytro said he had one and was tired of rebuilding it multiple times that is why he bought a 4 stroke. Either way its a gamble.Newfie Apex said:Couch, We do a yearly run out west every year (Buchans) and I am looking for another sled. No groomed trail riding here on the Avalon. Short track Apex waaaaaayyyyy to heavy for area and type of riding 144" would be better. We have taken our Phazer Mny Lites to the west coast a few times and they could handle aptly - have one with a Timbersled rear suspension and floats up front so its a bit better / lighter than stock.
Any of the 2 strokes are a crap shoot. We always take a spare sled for trips across the island ... too far to go and have a sled bugger up. There are a few Shift 600's (local) which may be a decent beater at the right price.

Both of my buddies have Etec 600's in the MXZ-X and GSX platforms. They are stupid light.
When a fat guy like me can grab the front bumper of that GSX and hold the sled up in the air in the back of a truck, it's light!
I'm intrigued with what the next gen ACE engine will be. The 900 seems like a great package in the GSX. But I do hear strong rumors of the 1330 ACE or something of that sort. They may get developed in their watercraft first.
Who knows. I guess I will worry about that when the Apex takes a dump. Hopefully not soon.

In my experiences I wouldn't trail ride any other sled except a Yamaha 4 cylinder 4 stroke. I was starting to get tired of the 2 Rx1's I was riding and knew the apex was a huge upgrade, at the end of the season last year I sold an 05 RX1 for an 06 Apex both had a little over 1,000 miles and upgraded for 300 bucks and the Apex came with a lot of extras (clutched, 4 sets of carbides, 4 brand new belts, a sled lift and the shock had work done by Pioneer performance) I can't wait or this season and would not by any current sled other than an Apex for strictly trails and lakes. While they are heavy it feels light compared to the 03 Rx1 I've ridden since 04. And I have towed too many Polarises off of the trails and I'm not a fan of any BRP product after an experience with a brand new Sea Doo.

The Polaris 600's have been great engines the 800's now are better than they where in 09 to 12
