I just recently picked up a slightly used 07 FX private sale bought from the original owner. He used it very little, its only got 300 miles on it, and it looks like new! He bought a Yamaha Extended Service plan on it which is good until march 2009. The sled has not been back to the dealer since it was bought, and is in need of some of the updates and fixes, all of which I would like to do soon before the season hits. I know it needs the reverse fix done for sure, and I’d like to see the others done as well (tunnel, starter…etc).
My question is: should I pay to have the warranty transferred into my name? Or should I bring the sled in and act as the original owner unless questioned otherwise? The dealer I will be taking it too was the dealer it was purchased from, but I could easily be the original owners son. The dealer doesn’t know me or the seller very well. The seller said he’d be more than willing to make any nessicary phone calls to help me out with this. My issue isn’t so much with paying to have it transferred, but I’m afraid they will then tell me that they wont do any updates on it until I have a problem, which will be in the middle of the winter when I need it the most. The season is very short here and I don’t have much time to enjoy the riding or time left on the warranty.

What’s my best way of combating this situation? I won’t out-right lie to the dealer. But if they don’t ask, or the original owner makes the phone calls, do you think we’ll run into problems? Or should I just be upfront about the whole thing and do a transfer? If the warrant was longer than just a few months I’d transfer it without a question, but its not.

Thanks!
Chad

I would bring it in and have the issues taken care of under the previous owners name, tell him he is a friend and you are droping it off for him, it cost me 45 to have my warrantee transfered, but mine will go till 2011, so it was worth the cost but yours will only have 4 months left... just my opinion

Transfer and extend it at the same time. Maxdlx

For $45 bucks I'd have it transferred without a question!! I was under the impression that it was $299! I have not called and asked since I did not want to raise suspicion.
Extending the warranty further is an interesting idea. I'm not opposed to it if the price inst ridiculous. Does anyone know if extending the warranty further follows the same pricing as when new, or is it more expensive? I guess I'll make a few phone calls today.

Thanks,
Chad

I transferred mine through my dealer when I picked up a used sled with YES warrantly remaining and it did not cost me a dime.

When I bought mine, I opted for the YES 3 year warranty on top of the 1 year factory....

Is there anyway I can extend it past the four years??

I will not own this sled without a warranty...
