Also check the bracket that pivots on the single bolt, it’s the L shaped bracket that connects to the Lever Rod. If the pivot bolt backs out even a little bit it creates enough play that the linkage won’t shift into reverse.

If the swivel bracket that connects the 2 adjusting arms (one horizontal one vertical) is tight, then adjust the top one ( horizontal) from 27mm to 27.2 or .3 i.e. very small adjustment to the longer length and should work. If you adjust to long you will have trouble shifting into forward. just something that worked for me.

Do you guys find that if the chain is out of tension, it may effect reverse operation as well? It's time for me to adjust both. And both are simple to do, just a quick question.

Yes, that's a very sloppy piece fully tightened.
I had to grind #32 down so it was not sooo sloppy & has a bit more accuracy/consistancy

Yes, part number 31 was loose on mine. Tightened it up and all was good. A few weeks later I was back to grinding and no reverse! Tightened it up again, this time with the help of locktite. Locktite is your friend!!Check the nuts on this l shaped bracket. Part #31. Mine were loose and reverse lever would not engage properly. Tightened them and works perfect now.

Thanks for the tips guys. I dug into it last night and did the normal routine.
On a side note, without removing the brake caliper, this is a PITA to get wrenches on those nuts!!!
1. Tighted the bolt holding the "L" shaped bracket as it was plenty loose
2. Did the proper adjustment on the chain to "finger tight"
3. Measured the distance with my caliper on the top adjustment, and it was still at factory spec of 27.5mm. I took that out probably 4mm before the grinding went away.
She now shifts in and out of reverse like the wind. I'm amazed at how little adjustment it takes to make that work well. For anyone who has taken chain case apart, there is quite a bit of movement inside the chain case to engage reverse.
Thanks guys, keep the track side down!

proper chain adjust is finger tight and then back off one turn. you could shear a shaft if it is to tight. Thanks for the tips guys. I dug into it last night and did the normal routine.

Specs says back off 1/4 turn. I have never sheared a shaft.

yes correct sorry 1/4 turn I have seen a shaft sheered from to tight of a chain. my cousin decided to adjust his own (not a mech at all) just snugged it up tight and rode it 200 miles later jack shaft gear sheared right off.Specs says back off 1/4 turn. I have never sheared a shaft.

Since it was so loose, as I gave it quite a few turns. My guess is running it a bit loose was not good, but not killing it. And since I didn't want it to be the cause of my reverse issues, I followed the service manual. Needless to say, it has always been my impression to go tight, then back it off as suggested.
So I fudged and went "light finger tight" and then tightened up the jam nut. I think it should be fine as it is now, but I may check it after another 100 miles. It's much easier to adjust than that reverse.
